Welcome @s.miller.brantley and @KILO5 !
Hello all. My name is Branden and Iâm 46 years old. Iâve been musical my whole life, but as I aged, I ran away from it. I grew up playing piano (classical music exclusively) and trumpet (high school). I always wanted to play guitar, but mom insisted on the piano. Iâve tried regular acoustic and electric guitar, but never considered the bass.
Our church had a Squire precision bass sitting in storage, and I decided to get it out with the Fender Rumble 15 practice amp and give it a whirl. With my background, it wasnât difficult to start playing single note rhythms along with our regular worship set. But I knew there was much more to this instrument, so I started searching YouTube for videos and landed squarely here on Bass Buzz.
I have started to take private lessons in-person at a local Guitar Center, but I just signed up for Bass Buzz to supplement. My in-person teacher is more interested in jam sessions, but I need to get the rust off my music theory and want to play some actual songs. I think that between him and Josh, I can elevate my bass guitar game.
Some of my favorite bassists are Geddy Lee from Rush and Marko Hietala from Nightwish. I also want to learn how to use âfillsâ to sweeten the music we play in church, and since I am the sole musician currently, Iâm hoping it inspires more instrumentalists to get involved.

Welcome @Branden !
Welcome aboard, glad to have you here.
Welcome, @Branden. Glad youâre here. Your prior piano work will be a great leg up for you as you learn bass. I believe youâll find that B2B will be far more valuable than your GC bass lessons. Not a knock on the guy, just a fact: Josh teaches so much more, and better, than the average bass teacher bear. Enjoy the lessons!
Welcome @Branden !
I will second the thought of Joshâs lessons being superior. I love my old teacher, and still love to see him and talk music, but Josh taught me more in 6 months then my in person teacher did in a year. Even though he is super talented, my teacher is a guitar player primarily, and second he just wanted to teach me songs. Josh starts you slow and builds up a foundation of knowledge and technique. My in person lessons were not a curriculum with a path, but a mish mash as we went along. Maybe your experience at GC is better, but I find Josh to be, just better.
Hi Everyone, My name is Chris, and I have been doing the B2B lessons for about 6 months now, and have been replying on threads but thought it was time to âIntroduce Myselfâ.
I am almost 60, gulp, and have a mediocre Japenese acoustic guitar I traded a Fender Music Man Bass for in 1978, (shoot me now), I wanted to be Jimmy Page or Eddy Van Halen, lol. Well I still suck at guitar, but at the end of 2021 a friend gave me an old bass when I mentioned I wanted to try it. Once I started to goofing around, I knew this was right for me.
I was using Joshâs YT videoâs to supplement my in person lessons, which I had found frustrating and lacking. Last summer I was going to be traveling for itâs entirety and did not want to zoom my lessons or pay to hold my spot if I was unavailable, so I quit and went to B2B, and woohoo!
I may not be band worthy, yet, but I am a player, and will be ready in the not to distant future, all I need to do is just keep at it. I am amazed at how well the lessons are put together and all the stuff you learn and can apply right away.
I am so glad to be here, and hope to be on the forum more in the future.
