Is a 15 watt backup amp even worth it?

I haven’t even bothered to plug in my Rumble 100 since I got the JBL monitors. I also have the 5" and they sound soooo good.

I’ve got my Ampeg RB-210 plugged into my mixer through the return on the Ampeg so that it acts essentially like a subwoofer for my 305s.

I love this idea, basically crossover filter would make it perfect

Could easily be done using the Helix

So, you just plug your bass into a DAI into your computer? If so, could I ask what JBL monitors do you have?

You’ll probably want some kind of amp simulation of some sort. Lots of options, in my case I use an HX Stomp which serves as both a multi-effects unit including amp and cabinet simulation, as well as a DAI. And outgoing audio device. So the monitors are fed from this unit. I have the JBL 305s

Thanks. I do have a multi-efx with sim. I foresee this being another rabbit hole…

So, I got a Rumble 40 but have also been eyeing a AMPEG Micro CL 2 x 10 inch 100 Watt Bass Stack that is for sale on FB Marketplace. I also have JBL306’s - Should I opt to go the DAI route instead? Opinions? Pro’s/con’s?

I was thinking the other day of running the wire from the Helix to the amp instead of the mixer to get rid of the hum. I need to play around with that today.

You can do some really cool stuff with send/receive in your patches, and setting a crossover is one of those. This is an example of one of my patches where I don’t actually use a crossover (so ignore the frequency), but changed it in order to post the screenshot here.

I definitely haven’t played with these enough yet. I managed to create my patches (stole and tweaked some of the presets) and got them set up to go out USB and act like a DAI. With this set up, would I go out the send on the Helix?

The problem isn’t the 8” speaker it’s what they do with an 8” speaker. My PJB 5” speakers blow away the rumble 40 even. Design is everything.

I can’t imagine anything that small that isn’t portable and battery powered.

I’d set it up so that you had a crossover split, then send the low end out whichever output you choose (via a send perhaps) to your amp and the high end to your monitors. I can’t say exactly, as I don’t believe the HX Stomp has the same capabilities as your Helix does for multiple lanes and outputs.

Yup. And it’s also the fact that Fender uses not super great speakers (an Eminence line made in China) in their combos. It’s like their pickups; they aren’t bad, but they aren’t great either.

In fact you could probably greatly improve a Rumble by dropping in a nice Celestion or nicer Eminence for not a ton of money.

Fender preamps are fine, not my favorite but nothing wrong with them. Everyone uses the same Class D power sections anyway so no big deal there. The speakers are probably the best ways to improve them if someone wanted to.

It’s been a looooooooooooong time since I was in to the speaker shopping though. Not even sure what the best path is these days.

There are groups on talkbass that discuss speaker replacement in all sorts of lines of amps, Fender in particular.

After seeing this review I’d really like to see how these go head-to-head with the used Ashdown Studio 8 I started with. Eight inches, thirty watts… I was super happy with it in my small apartment for practice (it can get far louder than I’d want in here, out of consideration for the neighbors).

Having said that, I got the Ashdown Studio 15 on sale and it makes the 8 sound like a small box (probably unsurprisingly). I’m trying to find a spot where I can stash the 8, though, since it’s so much more portable than the 15 (i.e. to go noodle with a guitarist or something).

I tried the PJB - it’s their oe product I do not like, no low end, to me not worth it.

I have a smaller Joyo I got on Amazon for $50 and it is pure crap. This one sounds trebbly as well.

Beware recording into a mic - it’s going to sound way better than in open air. A 15W amp is basically so you can hear yourself without headphones - not to expect a great tone. Same goes for these. Don’t get me wrong, they have a place, but for me, I’d put on headphones instead.
