Is a 15 watt backup amp even worth it?

I fully agree with John here.

Also interesting options:

Spark Mini

Blackstar Fly bass

The Spark Mini is quite good since it has a built-in rechargeable battery and a subwoofer included at the bottom of the unit. Blackstar only sounds good at low volumes, but way cheaper.

I had the Spark Mini too - the Joyo BA-30 is really much much better (sounding), at least for bass!!!

That makes sense since it is 10 vs 30 watts. Like anything with low watt will just kinda farts out at higher volume. I kept the mini because it is easy to use and has a ton of features.

Personally I wouldn’t settle for anything less than 200/500/800w. Just have it on low volume for practice and high volume for gigs.

I also like tube amps but you don’t need that much watt for those.

Yeah, I also liked the whole Shebang in terms of F/X and app.
Initially I used it for travelling and park. But bass was really an issue - it was “meh”…

The bass guitar sounds actually quite good on the Joyo. Not VERY loud and not VERY deep, but I was really amazed by its output. Good enough for the park, still too heavy for travelling.
Music (background tracks) s#cked initially, but I found the right EQ settings, and it sounds ok now.

In terms of FX I just power it via PC or smartphone, so that’s ok…

I came here to say this - my tutor has a Phil Jones amp, 4” speakers and it sounds bloody awesome! If I was ‘sound neutral’, this is what I’d be buying however, I do like the Ampeg sound.

Theres also links on the video to buy the Joyo (but not the PJ). I personally wouldn’t trust that review. While the reviewer may not have been paid directly, he is by receiving the gear, making that video and getting the clicks. Which is kinda monetary compensation. If he shits on the Joyo, Joyo stops sending him units to make videos of.

I can’t judge it as I don’t know the Phil Jones. I do know the Joyo … and for its size its really magnificent (in terms of bass guitar tone).

IMO, the PJ bg-cub and double four are a lot better than the nanobass. They’re also among PJ’s most popular compact options. You can’t really compare those to desktop practice amps.

For practicing in the living room, it’s perfect. I have a 30 W Joyo that does the job and it has Bluetooth to connect music from the phone to play along. You can feel the bass on this one and I run it on low volume, vs headphones for a better sound and feel. I didn’t like being redistricted with headphones.

I wasn’t comparing, I don’t have the experience for that. The point I was trying to get across (not very well) is that they’re amazing amps and they don’t take up a lot of space.

Yeah, they’re definitely amazing. I just think those are better options since, well, size does matter a bit.

Size can matter for feeling the oomph. Not as much for the tone though; quality, cabinet and sensitivity matter more there.

Well, until you get to 15”. Those generally all sound muffled and muddy to me unless paired with a crossover tweeter.

Yep, both my 12” and 15” have one. As a bit of an amp geek I can say there is a night and day difference between the quality of amps and speakers.

These days I rather play on a good amp with low volume. I got fed up with compact compromises.
