Is My Action Too High

As a beginner, I know little about gear. Is the action on my bass too high?

What type of bass do you have? There are a couple of ways to check this and I am sure others have great videos for it. If you capo the first fret, hold down the last fret on the low E string use a set of feeler gauges to check the spacing at the top of the 8th fret and the bottom of the Low E string. I keep my Jazz bass at around .012-.014 that is usually the truss rod adjustment. There is another measurement to check I want to say it is somewhere around the 17th fret measure from the top of the fret marker to the bottom of the Low E string with a 6" metal ruler somewhere between 2.5mm and 3.0mm for Jazz basses you will have to check your bass manufacturer to see the specs for you bass. I hope that isn’t too confusing. there are tutorials on youtube for this as well
