Is Rocksmith worth it?

I’ve been contemplating using Rocksmith to learn some songs. For you that have used it, is it worth it? The website seems like more of an advertisement than anything else. Is it strictly a subscription service now? Is there actual software to be installed? How do you get started with it? Somebody break it down for me.

I’ve tried it and it didn’t work for me.

The issue I had was I could follow the various coloured symbols and play along.

But I never really learned the song. So I could repeat it if it was in front of me but I didn’t retain it.

It may be different for others. Maybe I just can’t learn that way. As always YMMV.

I would say if you do plan to pick it up, wait for a sale on Steam and get the 2014 version if you still can. It’s super cheap (or was, not sure if it is still for sale there).

I’m not a gamer. How does steam work?

Ahh, if you’re not a gamer it might not make sense to install Steam. Steam is the oldest and best game platform and marketplace.

Yeah… if you get Rocksmith… don’t do it through Ubisoft… use Steam

And this is the one to get…

But like @howard said… wait for sales, sometimes you can get 4 songs for 1USD

From what I remember ,you install Steam to your PC and you can (legally) buy and download games through it. A bit like the Microsoft / Apple store etc.

This , 100%. I used a similar method (Synthesia) when learning the piano, except I didn’t seem to learn much. I’m sure it is a good tool for some, just not for me.

Yeah… RS is for fun… not for learning.

I think it might even lead to an increase in mistakes if not addressed properly.

Then there’s the latency.

You need to add some optical cable and splitter box I think. I followed the instructions I saw on YouTube to make mine work properly. I also add another box to allow me to connect to my amp.

Before you buy, check out the songs and see if you like most of them.

Why?

I personally never liked it. It never seemed to register that I was playing.

Because most people will be playing to songs that arent for their level and will use whatever they can to play notes, instead of developing the correct technique… and lessons arent fantastic either.

Yeah, the lessons s#ck!

That can be true for any song you play, no matter it’s source!?

Yeah… but gamification will encourage you to play more to get that % up to mastery.

It can be a slight prey on the urge to get to 100. I think RS/Yousician can be useful yeah… but as a form of wind down… after you put in some work on your technique.

As you might know, I use Tonelib Jam - it has the “gamification” mode of Rocksmith (3d view), but without the tone recognition. I don’t feel rushed to get to some kind of high score because of that.
It always shows 100% of the tabs, which I prefer.

I can use the original Rocksmith 2014 songs or the ones of Customsforge.

For learning songs it’s perfect: I can loop, slow down, use 3d view or tabs. I control it with a 30€ 4 button midi switch, which makes it even better to learn, as I can jump back quickly, pause and resume in case I failed at a more complicated part of the song.

I’ve been using Yousician daily (10 min) and more rarely RS as I noticed it was taking me to a spiral.

But I am recently more focused on technique improvements than actually learning songs. Found some significant gaps that left me a bit negative when it comes to my skill.

So would you recommend Yousician over Rocksmith?

For moderate playing… yeah… but not many people do. I think it boils down to preference.

i have been using rocksmith on my sons playstation, he had it for guitar originally, i agree it wont teach you technical abilities, it is also not as quick a way to learn a song properly, but what i found really good was it gave you a good way to boost confidence in progressing with a song, using the speed and difficulty setting is great, i also found that i have to set my selector switch to full bridge pickup to make sure it gets all the notes i play, although this is still not 100% accurate, i have been using mine to play song on the tv, but i use disconnected mode and play through my amp and cab, so i can listen to what i actually sound like, this has been a good help with playing techniques, the PS is my sons, and i got him rocksmith for it years ago, so it only cost me the price of some new songs which i was ok with.
