I got curious about that, as I spontaneously used “She” for mine…what about you ?
“It.” It is my bass.
Mine are definitely an it as are my cars. I only just started calling The Beast “The Beast” lol (because it’s a huge green 6-string that weighs a ton).
Or their brand/models.
“My Schecter” “My Strat” “My Ibanez” “My Mikro” etc
I’ve seen the pic of “The Beast” and that name is apt!
(sidenote: lovin’ the purple basses! I have my eye on one as well)
“it”. I don’t anthropomorphize gear
Til today, some are shes and some are hes and some are TBDs (I should take a peek and find out).
The T40 is so heavy and massive I decided to call it Lunchbox even before it arrived.
My Sandberg is a ‘she’, the rest of my basses are “it”
Totally agree!
Interesting topic - I’ve always wondered why so many people talk about their instruments “she”. It’s similar to how a fighter pilots call their machines “she”?
When it comes to me, while using English, the bass is “it”. In my native language, however, the bass is always “he”, and the bass guitar “she” (grammar rules).
Funny you mention this. I’m not English native too, but I think music theory and the forum of course in English.
In German it would be “der Bass” > a male term, but I would never refer to it as ‘he’.
Mine is definitely a “she”.
@Hann yeah, the whole referring to inanimate objects as female has never really sat well with me for some reason. Giving inanimate objects names with no gender, like “Lunchbox” or “The Beast” though is totally cool and often hilarious
Portuguese speakers don’t have a choice
Usually I call it a “he” (o baixo, male - the bass), but it can actually be a she also (a guitarra baixo, female - the bass guitar)
Come on now, it’s 2022. The politically correct terminology is “they”.
That’s so interesting! I speak a little Spanish, and while I know some words are gendered because of o or a, I’ve never thought of those objects/concepts as being literally male or female. My dad is a native Spanish speaker, though (his side of the family is from Mexico) - I’ll have to ask him about that. That might explain a few things.
@akos Right? I don’t want to make assumptions, and my bass isn’t telling. I respect its privacy
All my devices (car, motorcycle, guns, basses, keyboard, computers, etc) are girls and have girl names. The only exception is my garbage disposal; his name is Oscar.
I don’t use pronouns for my 2 basses. I call them by their proper names; Darling Nikki, and Wendy.
Our disposal is named Igor!
I’ve never considered the pronouns of any of my basses. They’re usually referred to by their brands: “the Carvin”, “the Fender”, “the Ibanez”. For the non-Ibanez basses I’ll sometimes use their model: “the Xccelerator”, “the Dimension”.
When I’m chewing on my family’s ears about my basses, I have to go by colors: “the blue one”, “the red one”, “the brown one”.
