Killer Bass Lines Made Easy with the Pentatonic Scale

Forget learning a million scales - here’s how to play killer bass lines with just five simple notes from the pentatonic scale.

If you’re doing the Beginner to Badass course, this lesson is… a little in-between. You can definitely learn these scales after Module 7, and try them out on your own riffs. But learning some of the specific riffs in this video is more of a post-B2B difficulty ballpark.

What’s your favorite pentatonic scale riff? :guitar:

I have been trying to write my first bass line for the last couple weeks. It’s to a song my sister wrote like 20 years ago. Up to this point I’ve just been doing covers and not having a band to jam with I haven’t really had the need to write any of my own music. But I challenged myself a couple weeks ago to try to write a bass line to a song (inspired by those “so and so hears this song for the first time” videos). I had a pretty decent bass line going, IMHO, but this video gave me what I needed to get it to a more interesting place! Thanks for the great video @JoshFossgreen !

I’ll maybe post a video later of the song.

For pentatonic riff I love: Sir Duke - Stevie Wonder

So, my sister wrote this song about 20 years ago. I think she has written a few dozen songs probably. Anyway, as I said in my post earlier today, I have been wanting to write a bass line to a song and decided to try to round out one of my sister’s acoustic songs. I had a pretty good start on it, but then @JoshFossgreen 's video today gave me some ideas and I think it helped a bunch in the end. Maybe it made it too busy, I don’t know, I think it turned out pretty good. Suggestions are welcome.

It’s great fun to develop your own bass lines! Whether they are too busy or not is to a large degree up to you to decide (or your sister in this case ). Did you show this to her yet??

Given the type of song and since you are playing with a pick, you might want to study some Bobby Vega bass lines (especially with Pilgrim of Stoke) - could give you some inspiration:

By the way, you should start a band with your sister!! Great voice!

I told her I posted it. she said she wasn’t sure if she could listen to it. I think she gets embarrassed listening to her old songs. She and I have jammed a couple times, but nothing original. we live a couple hours apart so regular jamming doesn’t work unfortunately.

This is awesome @Paul_9207 , nice work on the bassline and I agree - your sister has a great voice :sunglasses:

Man she does not need to be embarrassed, she has a gorgeous voice and that’s a great song.

Excellent song and work from both of you.

Didn’t the piano come first, and haven’t there always been chords on piano?

I didn’t write this @JustTim

This was copied from the comments box on YT from one of Beato’s fan boys about the video.

Right, right. I wasn’t poking at you specifically, but asking legitimately about the screen shot you posted. It seems… wrong.

EDIT!
Or maybe that’s why you posted it in the first place, for ridicule purposes?

This coming back up just amazes me how much of a guitar player statement this is. Incredible, 10/10, no notes.

It’s perfect. Literally every sentence is wrong, yet mansplained perfectly, and making pentatonic the center of the musical universe. This could only have come from a guitar player. I love everything about it.

It’s so good, I’m tempted to think it’s parody.

Three sentences and Bach is misspelled by time we reach the second sentence.
