Knobs..... tone/volume knobs on my bass

You could turn your current knobs so that the screw holding them in place points up at you instead of down to the floor. I did that on my first Dimension; for volume, the screw pointing at me was full; for tone/eq, the screw pointing up at me was 12:00 or 50% or the center “dent”, whatever terminology works for you.

Have fun! It’s the easiest and most reversible “mod” you can make to your bass.

@Al1885 turned me on to this company: BlackZap Amp, Instrument & Pedal Knobs | Reverb

Go with something that matches like this:

or just have fun for a while…

Looks like they have just north of 400 options to choose from.

Love the hot pink chicken feet knobs. It’d be so awesome if they glow in the dark, lol.

They’re so cheap that you wouldn’t feel bad repainting them - someone must be selling glow in the dark pink paint… and add a tiny UV LED light clip to keep it glowing strong too!

You know I bought an aerosol glow in the dark spray from my local hardware store for my daughter Halloween project a few years back. We sprayed a few things in the shed and tested on a few spots. It’s still glowing strong.

current knobs don’t have a screw… looks the same no matter what. :frowning:

I decided to replace the knobs…they are on order!

  1. I found some ‘strat’ style knobs but was able to pick volume, volume, tone.
  2. I paid too much for knobs… but they sure do look pretty.
  3. American made, local vendor :+1:

Speaking of knobs, I have a beginner question: are they all “standard”, or must I check the dimensions of my current knobs & pots beforehand?
Also, if someone knows a good EU knobs reseller/manufacturer let me know, as I find the stock knobs of my Yamaha TRBX174 a bit boring and would like to replace them!

No. They are either metric or inch measurement, and they are not interchangeable. You’ll need to determine which you have. I am pretty sure the TRBX174 is metric but not 100% sure.

Greats thanks, I believe it’s metric as well but I’ll double check.

@Subgenius Thomann and Bax have a decent collection of pot knobs. Make sure you order for the correct shaft type (split or solid) and diameter!

One thing I would caution, I am not sure about the 174 but most modern Yamahas have actually quite nice metal knobs. So, you might be looking at relatively expensive aftermarket knobs to get ones as nice as you already have.

Unfortunately, the TRBX 174 comes with plastic knobs, I think all other models comes with metal knobs. But hey, it’s the cheaper entry so that makes sense… Apart from that I really like the bass, the neck is really comfortable.

I bought this PJ model as a first bass a I didn’t knew what I needed/wanted in term of tone, so I went with what seemed the most versatile option, but I think I may go with a P bass for the next one (if there is one… Hopefully I’ll not post on the GAS thread before a while… :upside_down_face:)

I agree.
Without markings on your bass what does the mark on the knob really mean?
How accurate is it around the circle without marks to match up to.
You will get used to it and go by feel.

I’ll share this link I just found in case of other neophytes like me are interested in knobs dimensions and are lurking this post:

It looks like it covers everything there is to know!

Thanks for that link. It is similar to this one that I had bookmarked, about guitar knobs:
