So the gist of the update is:
Surgery took much longer than expected 21.5 hours Vs 12-13.
Cancer had spread more than originally anticipated.
Tongue completely removed, voicebox and cancer had spread to esophagus.
Doc believes she’ll be on a feeding tube the rest of her life at this point.

Overall not great news.

More when I know more.

There is one bit of good news update.

Pam can feel in her left hand where she thought she might not be able to after the grafting. So she can still play bass and she is actually very happy about that.

Good to see her priorities are still the same.

That is great news, too bad it’s surrounded by the added dramatic news.

It makes my 6.5 year sentence look like Christmas morning.

Love you and always thinking of you @PamPurrs .
Sending nothing but good vibes your way

Here is the latest info from Sara (note she communicates via phone with a voice to text machine she has)…

Okay I am going to cut paste what the doctor told me on phone it’s the only way to know what she said… bare with me it’s long.

It wasn’t a complication it was just a very challenging surgery so the tumor was even larger than it looked so the whole tongue had to be removed with the tumor, if front part of her esophagus, her mandible had to be split so we had to repair that and then we had to take a very large – from her leg and then reconstruct her leg afterwards to close that wound.
(/T*UPBG tongue) she doesn’t – no she doesn’t have a tongue. It’s just reconstructed skin from her leg. So her whole tongue had to be removed because of the cancer. Yeah. Yeah. Most likely. I mean potentially she could get to where she could swallow, but there’s a good – there’s a good chance she’ll be on the feeding tube for life. At least long-term. She might be able to get to where she can swallow. It’s hard to say right now.

She – yep. Mmm-hmm. She’ll breathe through her neck. Yeah. Yeah, that’s fine.

No, just the front part of it (esophagus) Had to be removed with the – the voicebox, because the tumor involved that area too.

Um, well, there are just so many details, you know? I think, well – one thing is that we need to remove the port from her right chest because I had to connect to blood vessels in the right neck and her port goes into a vein that’s in the right neck so we’ll – we’re gonna remove that here in the next day or two. But other than that, I don’t think there’s anything in particular for you to expect differently than what you expected before except that we thought we would be able to save part of her tongue, but the whole tongue had to go.

I will see the doctor today around 2 or 3 get more understanding what was going on…

Wow, What a whirlwind!

Best wishes for you Pam! Healing vibes your way, If there is anything we can do, actually do, please let us know.

Cancer should get cancer and see what it’s like. It took both of my parents so it can suck a bagga.

Hugs to Pam and family.

hey john, i don’t know how this would play out but if it hasn’t already been done, i’m thinking we should extend an invitation to Sara to join the forum here. she already feels like she’s a part of it anyways, i think.

edit: and not just because of all this that’s happening, more just to invite her in to the family :+1:
