Just to be clear here, i was eyeballing Squires and comparable models/makes, no way i am getting close to £1,000 for this. Id be willing to spend as much as i did on the Peavy and get something of similar quality.
Also im not really looking for lightweight, just not “heavy for bass guitars” tier.
The lightest bass I ever played was the Ibanez EHB1000S. It was really feather light!
But it’s well beyond 1000€ … and not for everybody, in terms of design.
@sundog has one and is very happy, as far as I know…
That makes it easier - many modern basses will be around 4kg, which is really manageable…
@Bass_Rodent why not order Squier Affinity and a Harley Benton MV-4PJ from Thomann - and send back the one you don’t like. That’s what the internet is for!?
I thought the elaboration on the weight would have been beneficial, as i am not small, so like short scales etc wouldn’t work in other ways.
In my court it would just be space, i think i have space for one more bass guitar in my room, and i am already running into tensions with getting the replacement BEFORE i sell the Peavy.
And i dont think they might understand that i can send back items from the internet with little fuss. But to be clear, i am fine with this plan, and would do it if it where not for a third party. I might actually just get the Squire Affinity, if i don’t like it send it back for another make/model and keep going like that. (if i can get away with it)
If weight really is a problem, I suggest you try a semi-hollow body. I made a (modified) EB2 and it is the most comfortable of my 18 basses, and the lightest of the full size basses I have. Admittedly, they are usually very expensive instruments but Harley Benton make a long scale archtop for a rather astonishing £210 which has a splittable MusicMan humbucker.
Also: BassTheWorld has a HB signature bass coming, based on the HB I recommended.
So … do I trust BassThe World reviews, especially HB? No! Not at all, even if it confirms my opinion!
I just posted their videos here, cause they are used at BassBuzz on a regular base to validate this or that product choice. My logic: if we use them to promote any other bass (or gadget), why not use them to promote a HB?
But of course: it’s bollocks!!!
Personally, I don’t believe anything they say. But it’s great fun … and they do have the best bass faces (aka Frank!!!)
It’s not a full scale though, it’s short. That said, there is an EHB1000, and also an EHB600, which is cheaper and probably pretty light. (Both standard scale length.)
My reasoning: if the EHB short scale is so much lighter than my conventional short scale, than the EHB long scale will very likely be much lighter than a conventional long scale.
When I got the EHB shipment, I thought I got an empty box, until I looked inside. Impressive!
I have an older version of this same bass. The Rogue SX100B is basically a generic P bass. They are pretty light on the weight. Even their other models the LX200B, and LX205B. I also have a version of the 205B. Even Silvertone generic p bass is pretty light as well.
The bright star in the light bass world is the Fender Aerodyne, and can be found used everywhere. Japanese build quality, good pickups straight away, great platform for modding. I collect some old rare ones, but the standard piano black (PJ) or some of the newer colors (P/J/PJ) are easily found everywhere.
