Lighter Full Scale Bass Suggestions

EHB is not exactly light bass especially for a headless. Granted I have the 6 string but the beefy solid body is not light especially with that epic horn counterbalancing the headless neck.

I remember the 5 string 1005ms is nearly 8 pound. It’s not a heavy bass just not as light as one think my full size MusicMan 5 string BFR is just under 7.5 pound. Then again I favor heavier basses.

And the most important one the Steve Harris P bass. Maple body, maple neck 12 lbs of deliciousness :joy:

When I picked up my Squier CV Jazz it was light enough to make me notice right away. So I weighed my basses:

  • Squier CV Jazz = 3.82 kg
  • Fender Am Std Jazz = 4.15 kg
  • Yamaha TRBX605 = 3.91 kg
  • Yamaha BB734 = 4.35 kg

I assume the Std Jazz is made with denser wood because all the other dimensions are the same except that the headstock is 3mm thinner on the Squier. I’m sure no one will be surprised at the BB.

So far that seems to be for some where they have just a handful in stock and tied to a specific serial number. Drop-shipped items they don’t. It is interesting how big of a range a specific model can have for weight. I’ve seen some models have a 2-3 lbs spread between SNs for theoretically the exact same thing, down to the color.

Heavier basses are generally better for me. I prefer basses in the 9-11 lbs range, it feels great. Light basses has their charm but don’t feel as good. I sported a few sessions with 12+lbs it’s ok. My heels complaint a bit but I alright with it.

I was contemplating going with a J bass, but as i cant go and try them out i thought id just stick with the format that i know and try and go lighter. (the only problem i have with it)

Ahh yeah I should have called them out as heavier too - they ain’t light.

Completely random question here, but is not having a notch or dial for the pick up knobs normal? Just thought it was worth asking given i was replacing, i found it kind of annoying the Peavy didn’t have any sort of notch or indicator for where the knobs are facing, it was just off or on.

totally normal, most of my instruments haven’t had them.

Normal like @howard said.

I turn down between songs apart from that it’s on full.

Use your ears to hear the difference the tone knob makes. You don’t need a mark / indent for that.

Just for closure sake, i think i will give the Squire Affinity PJ bass a go, then go from there. I will try to choose a retailer with a good send back/selection so sending back shouldn’t be too much of a issue rather than the choice of just peavies.

I’ve had two Peavey Milestone basses (a III and a IV), and both were around 9.4 lbs or so. Very light, with skinny jazz-like necks and pretty minimal headstocks. Unless the bodies are made out of bog oak, I don’t see how they are so heavy.

9.4 lbs is light??? Thats Yamaha BB territory.

I would say 7-8lbs is light but 9+ is getting up there. 4kg is a good upper limit for light IMO.

This one might be worth considering:

It’s on sale for £479.00 at Andertons for the moment.

I know it’s more than your £300 budget, but if you want to get a bass that is sure to be lighter, most will cost way more.

The other only option is going out weighing basses, but the difference will mostly be natural variability in the density of the wood used.

Perhaps a hollow-body bass would do the trick,…too light a bass produces serious neck dive.

cheap basses ‘usually’ mean cheaper/heavier woods.

Always exceptions, but this is going to be an issue for you perhaps.

Either the Sire V6 or P6 are great lightweight basses.

Yeah, but I’m comparing to the SH signature P bass and Stingummathing.

We all know that thing is stupid heavy. My Mexican P Bass is 8 1/2 ish pounds. Lovely.

11 lbs 6 oz yeah no way.

One of the reasons I sold it. Never meet your heroes.

11 pounds 6? The hell? Is Steve’s sound driven by lead weights?
