So I was cruising along until James Brown showed me I had a brand new bag of Thumbs. I printed out the Section for the lesson and I took some time making sure I had some rational fingering but it wasn’t anywhere as smooth as required. Couldn’t do the slow attempt and I’ve gone back to chunking the printout. it isn’t as easy as Joss blithely seems to offer. Bit of a bummer.
Easy stuff is fun and gratifying to play, but the hard stuff is what actually makes us grow as players.
You’re doing the exact right thing. Isolate each measure. Figure out the note durations within the measure. Slow everything way, way down — put aside tempo at this stage; it’s more important to get the notes under your fingers in proper order relative to each other. Practice this several times slowly, slowly. Then add another measure to the one(s) before, using this process.
When you’re comfortable (feeling less overwhelmed) with playing each measure, string them together, creating a progressively longer bass line as you go until you have the entire thing marginally under your fingers.
Take things slow and as dispassionately as you can. You got this.
Yeah, the first time I got to this lesson I massacred the song. Like first degree murder.
And then the next day at work, my iPod shuffled the song up during lunch just to mock me.
Ack! I’m 5 lessons away (so hopefully 5 days away) from this…
This is exactly where I am and couldn’t even get through the lesson lol. Granted I was doing it right while recovering from being sick, so hopefully will be a bit better with a clearer head. But I expect to have the same result as Vader.
