Motown for beginners?

Hi, I just started learning bass last month and I really like 60s music a lot and especially enjoy motown. Do you guys have any recommendations for songs that are beginner friendly?

My Girl by the Temptations is a good one to start out with and Green Onions by Booker T and the MG’s is all quarter notes and very doable.

Papa was a Rolling Stone if you can handle a bit of syncopation. Hard to get simpler than that

The Supremes, Where Did Our Love Go. Here’s my cover of it.

Also Gloria Jones, Tainted Love, again my cover of it.

Both are pretty easy to play and super-satisfying!

I’ve been really enjoying Black Pumas lately.

The basslines tend to have a very motown feel to them.

“Fire” is a great song IMO and I’m having a ton of fun with it.

That is good!

I always enjoyed “Colors” by them and then forgot to dig into their albums.

Was happily surprised at how good they are.

Definite Motown feel to them while sounding slightly modern.

Don’t think their bass player Brendan Bond gets enough attention. I think he’s more a session player that joins Black Pumas on tour though.

Baby Love by the Supremes is quite approachable! It’s almost all quarter notes in a easy pattern.

Nope, he’s been a member of the band since about 2018. These guys are some of a long line of Austin’s finest musicians.

A longtime running joke has been that anyone who tries to move to Austin is stooped at the city limits, handed a guitar, and told, “Get to work.”
