Move between A and E string on same fret fast?

Hi, I’m a beginner that have a very specific question about proper technique when moving between strings on the same fret. I want to learn to play a particular phrase that I like, but I struggle badly with the technique and I dont know what is “best practise” for this. Do I use same finger and move it fast, or do I cover both strings at the same time or what do you guys do?

Maybe the course covers this at some point, but I’m still in the early stages.

Welcome, I think Josh calls it a “finger roll” or similar. It’s one of the techniques that you’ll use quite regularly. The best way I have discovered learning a new techniques is to learn a song that does this. Off the top the top of my head I can say that Tom Petty’s “I won’t back down” it the chorus section. You roll G to C back to G then to D a few times then the verse pattern comes back. There are also a lot of chugging 1/8 notes too for what its worth but overall not terribly difficult.

I know this is covered in Module 10 Lesson 1 with I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry. I am pretty sure it is mentioned before this but I remember is specially on this song.

Thanks for your replies. Finger rolling seems to be the technique I should use for this as well. I will give it a go

It looks like you may be on the 7th fret. If you are hitting this with your pinky, the lessons also show using the pinky on the A string 7th fret, then going over it with the ring finger to the E string 7th fret. We did this in one lessons.

Since you’re just fretting one note at a time, you can use another finger or do the finger roll as suggested.

Try experimenting which finger to use on the 5-6-7.

  • index-middle-ring and then the first or middle finger for the last 7
  • index-middle-pinky and the first or middle finger for the last 7
  • move the first finger down the fretboard 5-6-7 and then roll to 7
  • index-middle-ring and then the pinky finger for the last 7, just to see how difficult that would be
  • start on the middle finger, use ring and pinky and then the index finger on the last 7

This move is great because it’s a fifth down which often gets used as an accent.
