Musicians/bands you respect but can't stand

As I read through this, two bands kept coming to mind for me. Pink Floyd and U2. I fully recognize their popularity and contributions to music, and they certainly deserve respect for that alone. Heck they both even have some tunes that I find a little catchy. Overall, I just cant stand either of them.

Early in B2B there is a U2 exercise, and my wife got a kick out of how annoying I found the entire thing. Just gritted my teeth and played through the pain.

@Gloucestre whilst I love the original, I’d forgotten how good this version is. Thanks for the reminder! :+1:

Guns & Roses is the first band that comes to mind. Duff is a great bassist, my mom actually went to school with him, slash is a great guitar player, and Axl has an immense vocal range but they are one of the only bands that I rush to the radio to turn off. Axl is notorious for being a POS drunkard and ruining shows that people paid tons of $ to see. Can’t stand 'em. One of the most insufferable bands of all time IMO.

When Brian Johnson had to take leave, and Axl fronted AC/DC, Angus got Axl to the shows on time and sober for the whole tour. Angus is badass

I feel similarly. Some of her songs I can listen too, but I’m not a “Swiftie” by any means. I would even argue she is one of the best songwriters of her generation, but I’m just not a fan.

Maybe Axl felt some sense of responsibility since he wasn’t performing with his band. It’s one thing to ruin your own show, but to do it to another band would be incredibly scummy

@Ant I’m a huge GnR fan but I get why some people don’t like them. I’ve seen them three times. Second time was at Manchester City’s (old) ground at Maine Road Road, Manchester. My mate and me rode on motorcycles for over four hours from the south coast of England, where we were in college at the time, to see them. When we arrived, the area around the ground was strangely quiet. Turns out Axl had had a pissy fit because his girlfriend at the time had been spotted on a night out in LA (I think) with Warren Beatty and the show was subsequently cancelled because of his tantrum.
The show was rescheduled for the following weekend. Sound Garden supported, followed by Faith No More who were absolutely incredible - Mike Patton’s microphone cable got stuck on something so he carried on singing on the spot whilst doing somersaults. Billy Gould’s bass made my teeth fall out! Oh, and Axl had a pop at Warren Beatty during the show and I’m not sure I could blame him.

For me and I know I will get some hate mail is Led Zeppelin. Everyone always says they are the greatest rock band of all time. I dare to disagree. I would rather listen to Black Sabbath all day than 20 minutes of Led Zeppelin. They have a few good songs I listen to but not many. The other is Metallica. They made it big commercially but at the cost of their creativity in my opinion. The best thing that ever happened to Dave Mustaine was being put out of Metallica. GO MEGADETH!

Always disliked Zepplin. Never liked them at all.

The worst thing is they were inescapable.

I like some of their songs but I can only listen to Zepp for a while before Plant’s voice just grates on me. Same problem with GnR and Dream Theater.

Although, admittedly, Dream Theater grates on me mainly because it was my evil ex-wife’s favorite band and she listened to them all the time than it is actual problems with the singer’s voice.

Okay, good. I thought I was the only one.

I can’t stand Black Sabbath, Metallica, Megadeth, et al. I respect them as musicians, though.

We each like what we like, and vice versa.

Personally, I’ve always dug Led Zeppelin for their originality, songwriting, virtuosity of each member, and as a band. I understand others have opinions, too.

Here are some I agree with.

YMMV

Zepp was voted favorite band all 4 years in highschool. So naturally I migrated to bands like Ramones and Judas Priest. I liked Zepp, but became turned off by popularity. Which looking back is dumb, good music is good music, popular or not

But at 18 I was not interested in the establishment

Awwww, I love Bonamassa, but only as himself. I find myself questioning his production of Joanne Shaw Taylor’s most recent album.

Awwww, I love Bonamassa, but only as himself. I find myself questioning his production of Joanne Shaw Taylor’s most recent album. But I agree with others about Zeppelin. Being a big Bobby Chouinard fan, I tend to think Bonham was a complete waste. Could he drum? Yes, absolutely. But Bobby always said the essence of great drumming was the touch, and my ear says Bonham didn’t have it. Bobby wasn’t a flash drummer; instead, he always connected deeply with what the song needed.

Oh, and, not big on Rush, either. Love CCR, Cream, Iron Butterfly, etc. But also Fleetwood, Starship, ABBA, The Bangles and the The Go-Go’s, and add in Beach House for a little contemporary touch.

Yeah, this topic is akin to asking people what their fave food, drink, movie, or preferences in dates/spouses are.

There will be some consensus here and there. But individual, personal band/musician/genre evaluation criteria will inevitably lead to differing opinions.

The one thing we can all agree on is that we love music.
