I am really enjoying the lessons on B2B! But i am experiencing some trouble to mute the strings with my fretting hand. Seems i am getting sound like i am fretting or tapping the string most of the time. Sometimes i manage to find the sweet spot between sounding the fret or ringing of the string and get it muted. It is a very thin line. Touch it, but don’t press, it is very hard for me. Any tips to improve it?
Also, should i first tackle this or just continue with module 2 ?
Continue with the next lessons. The muting will come with time as you move forward.
For the muting:
Be sure your hand is relaxed and light. If I try too strenuously to mute my hand will be too heavy and stiff and cause the strings to sound.
Have more than one finger resting on the strings you are muting. One finger/one muting point almost always causes my strings to resonate. Two points of contact solves the problem for me if a light loose hand doesn’t.
Avoid the harmonic points. Light contact at the points of the string that give you those angelic harmonic tones will…give you harmonic tones instead of muting.
Continue on. It will come over time with repeated practice!
There’s a “minimum viable pressure” exercise that Josh has advocated. Basically press on a string to make a note, then slowly let off until you find the point where the note no longer rings. And going the other way, press lightly on the string and slowly add pressure until you feel how much pressure is needed to fret the note cleanly. It’s amazing how little it takes.
Over time, you’ll get the feel for it. But it takes practice.
It really just takes practice to get down right. I’m still working on it myself. Also, try not to mute on certain frets, like 5, 7, 12, 19, 24, etc. or you’ll accidentally hit the harmonics of the strings. Those are fun to play with, but not when you’re trying to mute.
You might try running the workout again and if you can get it some of the time, move on. There will be plenty of opportunities to work on it moving forward.
It’s good that you’re already mindful about muting, so just keep at it. Josh will give you five or six more muting techniques by the time you reach module 6!
Thank you all for the advise. I think i will do the lesson once more and then move on. My worry was to carry on and getting in trouble later in the process by missing some fundamental skilss. But as i understand it now, it wil be addresssed again later on.
