Muting strings below the one you're playing

I’m a total beginner and have just completed module 1. I really enjoyed it but have a question about finger placement on the strings/fretboard.

When I hold a string on a fret, should the strings ‘below’ my finger be muffled by my finger or should I try and keep the end of my finger upright enough so that only the tip of my finger is touching the string I’m playing & all strings lower down are uncovered? For example, if I’m playing a note on the D string, is it OK that my finger mutes the G string below it?

Muting is almost always good but also be careful to fret/pluck correctly.

Great - thanks for the clarification

Yeah playing bass is the opposite of strumming guitar here. On bass you generally want to mute as many of the open strings as possible.

Relevant, in case you haven’t seen it:

Getting in the habit of good muting from the beginning will only help. Even if it somewhat slows down the learning. I’m wishing now that I had focused on it more than I did when I started.

Thanks for that. Really useful video that clarifies things totally
