My Bass guitar position and technique

What I am doing wrong. I can only reach the 9 to the 12th frets on the white bass with all 4 fingers!
On my black Bass guitar I can only reach those frets with a 3 finger shift!

On my white Bass I might can some what reach the 9th to the 12th frets with all 4 fingers; also, notice at the 1st to 5th frets how I have to shift my thumb outward and my elbow inward to keep from feeling the wrist pain and bicep strain!

When I curl my wrist outward that is when I can play with the thumb behind the neck with the 4 fingers on somewhat all 4 frets!

SOMEBODY PLEASE TELL ME WHAT I AM DOING WRONG!

Is your thumb in its usual position? If it is that’s the first problem. Your thumb should shift between your middle and ring finger in order to provide a proper leverage and flexibility.

I would not worry about how many fingers you can line up as long as you can fret the notes. I have a UBass first 4 frets is already a tight fit. People with big hands and long fingers still have more advantages than the opposite, lol.

@marknox67 Have you found a solution for yourself? I know it’s been a while.

I found these two videos helpful:
Josh on small hands

Adam Neely about the neutral position

Cheers
Antonio

PS: I also struggle with this
