As a beginner who likes different types of music would a PJ like the Yamaha BB434 be a good option.
Thanks

The BB434 is a great bass, especially for playing different types of music. You’d have a hard time finding better for that purpose in that price range. The only thing comparable imo are some of the Sire PJ basses.
BB434 is a great bass. Very well made. Great value. Great for a very wide variety of music.
I will second the above that I generally believe Yamaha and Sire are the two brands that you really can’t go wrong with.
Your best bet is to try several in person. But if you buy that BB434, you will not regret it.
The BB434 is a great bass as mentioned above.
I love the neck profile on the BB434. I’ve got a Sire P5 too (not a P/J) and rolled fret edges aside I like the Yamaha neck better.
No that would not do! Only Fender has the true claims to the PJs across genres, ![]()
Came kinda close to buying my first Fender today. It was a guitar (Telecaster with the lipstick at the neck) rather than a bass… I liked it, liked the sound and really liked the feel of it. It didn’t grab me and make me take it to the register though.
The BB434 is one of the best values in that price range, definitely a great choice.
So… a normal Telecaster ![]()
(that’s the standard Tele neck pickup)
Tele’s are all about the bridge pickup (which is indeed something special). I have never found a Tele with a stock neck pickup that I liked. I put a P90 in mine and it was a vast improvement, and balanced the bridge twang nicely.
Yep, I specifically targeted a standard config since it was the first one I’ve played. They had the HH ones… I’ve already got that coveresd with my Revstar. My Yamaha is also why I’m not all that interested in a strat, rolling back to bridge with tone at 10 and the push pull out on an RSE does a convincing strat tone… even with the humbuckers. That tele isn’t a sound that I have or can replicate, kinda like the jazzmaster that I got yesterday. I prefer the JM tone to the Tele but I liked it enough that I could see myself with one at some point.
For me it would be Telecaster all the way over a Jazzmaster (with Jazzmaster pickups - it’s really too bad they aren’t P90s.)
I really dig the Jazzmaster aestheric though, it’s a great looking guitar. Standard Teles are nice looking but definitely look like something someone just cut out of a slab with a jigsaw ![]()
The more modern contoured ones are better though.

P90 neck n tele single bridge is my favorite setup; Schecter Guitars
I love everything about that except the bridge. I kinda loathe those double saddle bridges, they make intonation a pain in the ass. Not a fan of the jazzmaster / jaguar bridges either (why I went with the G&L over the Fender). Those telemaster / jazzcasters are awesome though. ‘Spensive for a decent one but awesome.
Oh yes,
Asat special or the bluesboy; great sound
If you can ask to pull one off the wall and try it, I’d give one of the Dohney’s a shot if you can find one. Couple of days in of getting my bearings and EQ set, it’s kind of got the JM jangle especially on the bridge pickup but its less pronounced than on a Fender. This is helped even more by the 2 tone knobs (basically a passive 2 band EQ). It very much has the personality of a jazz but… I guess I’d describe like you have the ability to put a suit on it to go to dinner but its still got a mullet.
I just realized that this is a Squier paranormal offset, and is dirt cheap. Thank you for getting me to go down this rabbit hole. I love the JM shape but really dig that tele bridge pickup. Any clue how easy it would be to replace that single coil with a mini P90?
Right on! Yeah, the Fender versions can be had from the mod shop and are like $2k or so. Sorry, should have called out that the one I posted was a Squier!
Seems like it would be easy enough, Fralin makes what appears to be a good option for example. Swapping pickups is fairly straightforward assuming you can solder.
Or likely even better:
