I just recorded my second bass cover. I am still very nervous in front of camera, so I think it’s far from perfect, but I tried my best. What do You think? I would appreciate if you leave a comment with your opinion here and on youtube. All advices and critics are welcome. ![]()
You played it well and on time, you should be proud
- Your fretting hands need to relax a bit more.
- You should use more 1 finger per fret.
- You can also use small breaks to relax your hand on the strings, instead of keeping “the claw” tensed, waiting for the time to restart playing.
Compared to the first cover, there is visual and auditive improvement. You are in the right way.
Yes, you are a bit nervous… but it’s normal… I am 47 and I am always nervous when recording myself…
I don’t know if you practice with your sister, but if you don’t, I think you and your sister should release a video together!
You did a very good job and I am now listening to Holy Diver and Malgorzata also doing a really good job! Please keep having fun and playing!
A fun fact… I’m practicing Élan, Ever dream and Pharaoh Sails to Orion for a cover band. ![]()
I think everyone has been through that, so can empathise. Over time you will learn to relax when playing which will help immensely, even when not recording.
That is a good cover, you should be happy with it, and great choice of song too ![]()
Awesome. Your intonation is very good. Your bass sounds cool. I look forward to you in the future when you are more relaxed grooving and smiling!
I also think you are nervous because it is important to you what other people think. Play for you!
This face is what @Linda means… the “success”, I like this thing…
It’s half a smile, but you lit up, was nice to see that smile! Do it more and have fun!
Good Job @Aleksandra You nailed the notes now. The only thing missing is some attitude, ![]()
Clearly this is one of your favorite song, because there are a few moments there I can see that you were letting lose and even enjoying yourself.
Continue to strengthen the muscle memory and try this.
Listen to the song twice with no bass just air play along with the song. Then put the bass on your lap and unplug the bass from the amp and play along with the song a couple of times. Summon your inner David Hungate and just let it loose. You’d be surprised how much better you’d get without even playing a note over the amp.
I do this fine tuning on pretty much every song on my Gig set list.
Nice job. You did really well for the song.
I think @Megatronpt hit on my only advice…
You can also use small breaks to relax your hand on the strings, instead of keeping “the claw” tensed, waiting for the time to restart playing.
It’s most noticeable in the chorus. Use that break after the ascending notes to relax your hand a little bit. You’d be surprised how much tension you have in your hand that you don’t realize until you relax it. Taking those little breaks (even if it is only a second or two) will help you play longer songs and/or longer periods of time without your hand cramping up.
And yeah, that quick little half smile at the end where you were clearly thinking something along the lines of “Yeah, I kicked butt at that” is what it’s all about. Go back and watch most of the cover videos we’ve all posted here and you’ll see a bunch of those either at the end of a song or in the middle when someone has just nailed a riff or a fill or something that always gives them trouble. And you’ll probably also see a bunch of them that end with a look of relief for having just made it through.
Remember, professional musicians do as many takes as they need in the studio to get the song right, so you can too. And you don’t have to tell anyone whether the video you post was take 1 or take 100 or anywhere in between. Honestly on a couple of mine, my standards went down after about take 4 or 5. I got it to “screw it, that’s good enough”.
Oh wow! I saw your shooting videos a few years ago. Pretty cool you’ve ended up here with us.
I think you did great. Things like nervousness and the fretting hand going claw when you get excited, that happens to everybody.
Get the band together and start rockin’!
You’re ready.
Thank you so much for your comment. I can definitely feel and see that my hands are very tense. When I practice without camera I am more relaxed and comfortable.
I would love to finally record cover together with my sister. We don’t really have a place to record it properly together, so it will be a little bit tricky, but that’s definitely a plan for the future. Right now she practices with her drum teacher to do Rush drum cover, which is a huge challenge for her and takes time.
Thanks for good word for my sister as well, it means a lot her.
Thank You very much! ![]()
That’s a lot of first steps (learning a full song, playing in time, recording yourself) so be kind to yourself !! To me it feels like a superb start !
Well done ![]()
If there’s bands out there, being able to record only on iPhones and what not, you should very well be able (provided you find a schedule) to setup a couple of phones, even if static in front of both of you.
Don’t think that as a limiting factor… it’s easily surpassed, you don’t need a proshoot!
What will happen from there, will happen. I don’t know your ages but you are both young… and I am pretty sure that if you keep working with will and dedication, we will be seeing you hitting public stages!
Best of luck to you two and hope to see more frequent videos! ![]()
Thank You for your comment.
I think sometimes my ambition doesn’t let me relax.
Smile of relief that I made it through without big mistakes. ![]()
Thanks for your comment. I am actually shy person, so it’s a good advice to work on my attitude in front of camera.
I know a few artists who are pretty shy in person but once they get on stage their Alter Ego just take over.
Thank You so much for your advice. ![]()
Thank you for your comment. I have many different hobbies. ![]()
Thank You so much. ![]()
That’s really good for a second recording!
I think you got lots of good ideas already, not sure I have much to add.
I was wondering why you used your first finger mostly in the chorus, but we all find our quirky fingering for songs.
You sound good!
I also get nervous and play way worse when the camera is on… It is what it is.
