On the inside, like something broke off in there. Can anyone tell me how bad this is?
You need a new tuner (aka tuning machine).
Gotoh is a brand that makes good quality, affordable tuners.
Let us know what brand and model of bass you have, and chances are someone here can give you advice about what to buy and how to install it.
Happy Upgrade Day!
It’s a Ibanez SR400FM. Is this the sort of thing a person can replace themselves?
Yep yep, Take this nut off, On the back will be probably a Phillips head screw, take that off as well and it will drop out. Take note on how tight the nut is coming off, they are not super tight but you want them firm going back on. I have these two that I will gladly send you if you want.
Second the Gotohs! When the pegs on my Ibanez needed replacing I got a set of gold tone ones on discount from Sweetwater. Overall a very simple swap tho on one of the holes in the headstock I had to do some light sanding for an optimal fit. Good luck!
You are the man. @RBC64 what a Buzzer
Oh wow, that would be amazing. Can you just replace them as you go, or do you replace them all at once?
One at time, as necessary, is all you need. Kinda like replacing a burned out bulb or a bum tire on your car. Replace as required.
Shoot me an address and I’ll get them to you.
This is one of the reasons I love this forum
Thank you so much for the help
Thank you so much for the help, I appreciate it so much! My throat was in the pit of my stomach I thought this was going to be something really bad, and instead I’m more encouraged than ever. Thank you!
aka, ‘machine head’.
The coolest name for them.
Glad to do it, I’d rather see/hear them playing on your bass than sitting. I will get them sent out today. Left side and Right side
You are a star!! ![]()
Yay! I have strings again!! I’ve decided there are very few things in this life that are as sad as a bass guitar without strings.
Thanks again @RBC64 !
You are welcome, glad your back playing.
