My wife built me this Harley Benton P Bass Kit

Hello

My wife built this Kit. She has also done the Vinyl with Epoxy and is still sanding the headstock but I wanted to get it set up as the Gig it’s been built for is on the 18 April and I want to get it played in

I am amazed that you can buy a kit that feel fine and sounds fine for less than 90 Quid. It’s amazing

It’s also my bass to try and learn more about setup and things. I’m getting first fret buzz despite having a high action at the 12th. I’m not sure why this is. I’m also tempted to get an adjustable nut (although I don’t know which one, or even if there is one)

That turned out fabulous. Love it!

If the truss rod is set correctly and the action is high, you likely have a high fret. Especially common on inexpensive or older basses but can happen over time on any.

It’s usually not difficult to fix with a fret rocker and fretting hammer, and at most maybe a crowning file:

Sometimes they are just a little high and you can’t even see it.

If the system would allow it I’d give that more than one  Great work.

Love the leopard print

That’s cool! I really like the tele-inspired headstock shape, not a fan of the “standard” Fender style.

That looks very cool with the leopard print. You should call your bass “Peggy”!

Also - I have the ABM 6240 nut on my bass. It’s an adjustable brass nut and it’s GREAT!

I would do a proper setup first though - it’s very likely that you don’t need an adjustable nut 8for now).
Just follow all steps in order - and don’t let your wife touch your nut (step 3) if she hasn’t done it before

Last but not least: there is one way to improve that bass easily. The HB pickups are only OK. It’s very easy to install an EMG precision pickup in that bass and it does not cost the world.

Update

The high fret turned out to be some Epoxy that had got under the neck which had the effect of creating a gap. Sanded that out and it’s not bad now. Intonates really well

I would like to get the frets down a bit. I bought a Fret Hammer but I haven’t had the confidence to have a go at it yet!
