Neck-thru vs Bolt-on

It’s really funny. All the genres I like have basslines comprised mainly of eighth and sixteenth notes. Solos will occasionally have a half or whole note. Sustain is a hassle more than a desirable trait

Absolutely. But given her trolling elsewhere on the forum, I’ll assume it’s incorrect until I’m shown the science (surely there must be something somewhere on this?)

Also it’s the least important part of choosing a bass for me.

Ahh apologies for assuming gender there.

Hey friends, just a friendly reminder to “be cool” as per the forum guidelines -

I know sustain and tonewood are VERY EMOTIONAL TOPICS :stuck_out_tongue: but let’s keep our usual friendly vibe regardless. :ogre:

We haven’t even gotten in to pick vs finger or 4 vs 5 strings yet.

Currently working on this, and sustain is the least of my concerns.

Every time the sustain topic escalates differently. It’s funny that anybody who’s here for a longer time still responds. It’s wise, not too.

This time, the tone (of the discussion) is more aggressive, unfortunately.

We’re just trying to help people avoid going through the rest of their lives being wrong

I have exactly one song where sustain actually matters

hybrid picking and every 5 string is also a 4 string so…

Can we, like, stop pointing fingers and calling each other names here?

It’s ok to reference Nigel Tufnel though.

Better work on your muting then.

Yes, I have resisted posting a Marimba for just that reason.

This sustain topic goes on and on and on keeping the same volume, maybe there is a word for that

Sustain is only an issue with hard wood

ok I cannot resist, I’m going to throw my baseless ideas in the pot !

but is sustain not mostly determined by the hardness off the bass, or hardness of the wood if the bass is made out of wood ?, at least to my simple brain this is where my understanding of nature leads me ?, but I’m new to instruments and dont have a clue, just wanted to get in on the fun and see if someone will call me bad names :þ hehe

and is this not why old instruments are so valuable, cos the wood hardens with age ?
