Trying to explain to a friend how the bass guitar affects the song. I’m looking for awesome songs where the bass doesn’t play at the start but when it comes in you can really tell a difference. Only one that comes to mind is “The Chain” by Fleetwood Mac but I know I’ve heard better examples.
I want to avoid having to use audio editing software to remove the bass.
Bass comes in WAY late (5:19), but when it does, it hits like a truck. But then again, also the whole song changes pretty soon, with drums coming in and all.
Here the bass comes in at 1:40. Ignore what you see in the video, she is not playing before that.
How much later you don’t say but one that comes to mind is Black Magic Woman as played by Santana. Begins with the arpegiated organ intro. Then the bass simply outlines the chord changes while Carlos plays his intro solo.
The main bass line doesn’t begin until after he’s finished that then takes over the rhythm chair and propels the song from that point forward. It’s a key feature of the song giving it it’s “feel” and a great example of how a bass line carries an entire song.
Saw them live on The Joshua Tree tour in the late 80s. This was my favourite part of the concert, the build up waiting for the drums / bass to kick in. Lovely. Best served loud. Really really loud
The bass pull-off that brings him into this song is so damn great.
I love Mike Dirnt.
It’s tough because when the bass comes in here, so do the drums, so the impact is not bass-specific… but I still love it.
