NEW! Fender Cobalt Chrome Pickups

Fender Cobalt Chrome Pickups

$250 P Pickup
$300 J/J Pickup
$350 P/J Pickup

I’m looking forward to hearing what they sound like. I’m sure the comparison videos will end up on YouTube once they’re released. I think they look cool and I like the adjustable pole pieces.

But dang! Those prices are steep!

Yeah. I have one on pre-order. We’ll see if I go through with it, would be on my pink mustang. Expensive but not more so than say Novak or Lollar.

Tax money has to go somewhere less I get tempted to buy a bass I don’t need.

Wow, you could buy another bass for that! They would probably weigh more than the manufacturer pickups so they would possibly be a neck-dive fix. I’ve just watched a You Tube video where a guy fixed neck dive on his Fender Mustang by replacing the plastic knobs with metal ones and also added a metal strap lock system. These Pickups could assist with it too, if you don’t mind selling a kidney. If my Mustang PJ neckdive isn’t resolved with the above adjustments, I might consider.

Most players replace heavy stock tuning machines with much lighter ones like Hipshot UltraLites.

Do a forum search for “neck dive” and you’ll find lots of input.

Having previously played piano and alto sax I had no idea what a big issue neck dive was. I put in a search on YouTube and almost burned down the Internet!

Search here, at the forum. You’ll find tons of good insights.

Besides the Hipshot ultralights, you could install a himass bridge on the mustang. A little more weight to counter balance in the right place. Simple change, 5 screws and restring it.

Hmm that sounds like a good option!

Bearing in mind your strap issues lighter tuning machines might be a better option.

Fender has been down a similar road before with the SCN (samarium cobalt noiseless) pickups that Bill Lawrence helped design. Fender Mod Shop Samarium Cobalt Noiseless Jazz Bass Pickups | Reverb. IMHO Fender’s marketing department is taking advantage of an old idea and re-marketing it at a significantly higher price to potentially get around previous patents. JMHO

Personal opinion obviously but for anyone looking to replace bass pickups I’d suggest checking out the Wilde P46 PBass and J45 JBass pickups Bill Lawrence designed and still sells at Wilde. Although Bill passed away back in 2014 the company is still operated by his widow Becky and their daughter Shannon. These are the very best bass pickups I have ever played and you’ll find them talked about quite a bit in the TalkBass forum if you search there. They’re also very inexpensive for boutique quality pickups other charge 2x to 3x as much for. Other than being a player who has used both Wilde bass and Telecaster pickups for many years I have no affiliation whatsoever with Wilde. I’m only making a suggestion based on personal experience.
