New speaker for Fernandes ZO-3 Bass

Wondering if putting in a ‘really good’ replacement speaker on this bass would give it any better sound.

I know a 4", 15W 8ohn onboard speaker being powered by a 2W onboard amp isn’t going to sound fantastical, but thinking it could get better maybe?
It is fine for quiet / travel practice etc but would be fun to maybe try to jack this thing up as much as I can.

The control cavity is uber small and very specialized so I don’t want to touch that, but thinking maybe speaker (and maybe pickup if I can find one) mods might do some good.

Question for all you speaker o files (@DaveT maybe or others) what brands should I be looking at?
Since this is a very odd size /wattage for bass, not a lot of info out there on what would be a great choice.

That’s a cool one stop shop bass.

Ya it is a lot of fun.

I posed the same question on ‘the other forum’ - that was a big mistake.
I never learn my lesson over there - only use it for classifieds.

Just went and looked :joy:

'You" and most folks don’t have the skills. It would need someone like an engineer to understand. Know your limits

Man that place is swamp.

Whatever do you mean?
They know things that no one else could ever possibly comprehend.

I am totally ok with folks that know a ton more than me, but that guy comes across as a total dic%. Some googling found who he is, and yes, he knows things - he just sucks are communicating.

From the MESA site:

Yeah you could rewrite his first post and not come across as a knob.

I don’t spend any time there. I have the basses and amps I need and people on here make me laugh. I also know I’m not very bright but i don’t need to be told that by strangers

The Uke bass with the added speakers in the body looked cool though.

Ahh yes, because unless you’re an expert in “transducer theory”, you cannot possibly fathom swapping one off the shelf speaker for another.

It’s even worse because of who the guy is; despite the fact that a speaker is a transducer, phrasing it that way is just punching down.

And, being talkbass, he also has a sycophant fan club, it seems.

For what the bass costs, I cannot even fathom that the thing is optimized.
This was my main point… could it be a little cleaner/better if I found a better quality driver?
But the group that apparently attends the Sheldon Cooper school of “I am better than you” can’t get out of their own way to understand the ask.

Instead it was “you are stupid, too many things will make it impossible, here’s some suggestions that have nothing to do with the topic”.

The best one was the guy who said to buy an external amp - thanks for paying attention skippy.

Oh I am sure it was… for cost.

lol yes, perfect.

Maybe there’s an easier solution checkout the Spark mini. The dimension looks doable. It’s certainly loud and clear enough as a BT speaker the question is would it be loud enough as a bass amp speaker.

If that was me I’d probably go that route and bypass the power requirements issue.

There are tons of mini amps that you could take apart and fitted to this bass have you considered this route?

Another option: unscrew, check speaker, order equivalent Celestion or Eminence.

The part I love the most was the guy was mansplaining to a professional engineer.

I can’t help at all but if you’ve got any questions about building a deck then call me!

Beautiful sunny morning in BC.

I have amp @Al1885
The whole purpose of this bass is that it’s all-in-one.
I don’t need another all-in-two.

Just trying to see how to mod it just like modding any other bass (but this one has a speaker and 2W amp).

Not looking for fantastical upgrades, just what can I do for fun that makes it better by any scale. Don’t want it louder, just a sound improvement if possible.

Also looking at pickups but this is a wonky size.

That’s probably as off-topic as it gets, but, wow, that is some kung fu level of craftsmanship I cannot even dream of - looks awesome

@John_E : you should probably be grateful agedhorse even deigned to provide a reply - not everyone gets to experience that!

A tiny smidgen more useful: the people from Bose seem to know a lot about getting good sound out of tiny enclosures - maybe there is a lead there!?!?

Sorry, it’s all I got…

This is where I got to all on my uneducated/unexperienced/unhorsed self, so you must not know anything either @howard
The only issue I see is none of them go below 90hz, but maybe this one doesn’t either.

Both the above have options to try and for cheap.
