Josh, I’m 77 years old. I’m deeply involved in the music scene in Prescott, AZ. as a music promotor. I have always wanted to learn to play an instrument. 2 years ago I bought an inexpensive key board and attempted to self lean from you tube. After 6 months I gave up. I bought a small bass for my 20 year old granddaughter. After one lesson from a very good instructor in town, she quit. 3 months ago I took her bass back and decided to learn to play it. I found the Beginner To Bad Ass. Started on the program and had to go buy a better bass and practice amp. I am dedicated to making it through the entire program. I have shown it to a few of my bass playing friends who said it’s a perfect program for a beginner and not to stop. I just started module 5 lesson 1. I’m disappointed with my rate of learning, I me having trouble with the medium and fast workouts in module 4 lesson 4. I am spending approx 1 hour daily on the lessons. I’m having trouble getting my right hand and left hand synchronized. I have a master’s degree in teaching. I am impressed with your teaching style, it’s perfect for my learning style.
Welcome! Josh always says if you can get through the slow workout then you’re good to move on. Just takes time and practice. I’m as impatient as one gets so I feel your frustration
Make a goal for yourself, whether that’s to play a full song, learn the fretboard, etc. Keep at it, you’ll get there.
Thanks, I just have been learning about the 12 bar blues and playing by the numbers.
Might sound stupid (since you’re already learning the 12 bar blues) but a smaller step is to try that classic rock-and-roll bassline (like in Jailhouse Rock from Elvis Presley).
Also, welcome! Don’t worry too much about the synchronizing with your left and right hand. If you set small enough steps for yourself, it’ll come before you can say bazooka!
Is Module 4 Lesson 4 still Billie Jean in the revised course? If so, you are definitely not alone. Everyone struggles with Billie Jean.
Welcome, @captwag. Glad you’re here. Learning to play an instrument for the first time is always challenging. The first few lessons of B2B are relatively easy, but Josh takes it up several notches quickly thereafter, by design. Don’t worry if lessons and workouts are difficult for you; they are for virtually everyone. Just work to play the slow workouts in a lesson, then move on. There’s a definite method to Josh’s madness. Just try your best and stick with it. It will come together quicker than you might think. Enjoy!
Thanks, I’ll not quit practicing. I play a minimum of 30 minutes daily. I wake up every mornig thinking about playing. At least 3 timesa week I am out in town listening to different bands and talking to bass players about playing. I see a couple of the players using the same techniques that Josh is teaching. All of them are encouraging me to continue. As a music promoter, I know all of the musicians in Prescott, Az.
I find that some quick wins work for me, find a song which is real simple and play along for an hour. I get the gratification that I’m getting somewhere. I just completed the course, have a look at my diary post and see the issues I was having.
Thanks for your suggestion, Ill try it.
