I signed up for Josh’s lessons and it’s been fun. I’m only on module 2, but I am reading people are practicing 1-2 hours a day. While I have the time, and I do lessons almost every day when I can… I struggle to practice daily when it’s the first 2 modules…(?)
In the videos, Josh says that you don’t need to repeat the lessons early on. Then what should i practice? I already have some music knowledge from my electronic music background. Should I be picking up some tabs to do outside of the lessons to progress further? Or keep going thru the lessons until there is a part where I need to practice for a long extended period?
The whole idea is to bring you along slowly and achievements will come without hardly acknowledging what happened. Just avoid building bad habits and you will be fine. Do your lessons and get some sleep. Next step will be smoother.
When I went through the course, I also had plenty of time. So for the first few weeks, I just did two lessons a day. The practice time really is built into the lessons. When you get further along you’ll have a better idea of what to focus on for independent practice. I’d suggest that if you get to any lessons where you can’t pass the fast workout, then a little extra practice on that technique, whatever it is, can’t hurt. But listen to Josh when he says not to get stuck on it. One extra day, tops, then move forward.
Personally I changed up the two lesson a day approach when I got to the point in the course where Josh suggests you start learning songs on your own. Then I cut down to one lesson a day, and spent the rest of the time on songs.
Just do the lessons and don’t worry about additional external practice - at this stage I would actually strongly recommend against it. Stick with just the lessons, and do as many as you want per day. Keep it fun.
After you are done with the course, you can then shift to practicing as you like, towards your own goals.
Just keep going at your own speed. You don’t need to do the full workouts before moving to the next module and you don’t have to something every day. Sometimes returning to them once you have progressed can work for you. A few of the songs in lessons are in the additional 50 song resources so you may want to try a full song. You can do theory stuff too like learning the fretboard notes or musical notation verses tab. Other stuff comes later like playing by ear and improv.
