Not exactly bass gear but

So I got one of these a while back (there may or may not have been a review this and keep it deal) but it’s an interesting little device and being able to massage the muscles and fluid out of your hands seems like it would be helpful after a few hours of practice.

Going to give it a go tonight after my 2hrs

Are you sure that this is for your hand?

I remember, when I was a kid, I discovered pictures of ladies using strange massage rods on their faces in normal “house wife”-oriented fashion catalogues (for Germans: Otto, Quelle, Neckermann).

This was the late 70s.

I was utterly fascinated why women had to massage their face or neck all the time! I remember asking my mother and grand mother about tenseness in their face, cause of this…

Little did I know that the application would be for completely different body parts

Ah, the innocence of childhood!

(The German description gives no indication of actual use, so its absolutely SFW!)

Oh that escalated quickly :scream:

One time my 80+ Grandma bought hand held massagers for everyone for Christmas. It was in her, buying as seen on TV stuff for everyone phase.

She was a saint and the sweetest gram one could ask for.

So my dad takes it out of the package, us college aged kids we’re all chuckling over the undertones.

He puts it on my mom’s knee…

She jumps halfway across the room, “GET THAT THING OFF OF ME!!!”

We all have a good chuckle.

Then my gram yells out, “you can even take it in the shower”

We all just about died from laughter.

LOL!!!

Yeah - embarrassment is the best source of fun!
I clearly remember the day I understood the real purpose of those devices

La Redoute Magazine also used to have a couple of pages dedicated to facial massage devices.

As for pre playing… because I have slight arthritis I do Moxibustion at home.

It helps a lot!

I will be looking forward to your report on how well this works.

This strikes me as one of those things that could be really helpful, or complete snake oil. The fancier the device, the more suspicion I treat it with. I work out a lot and find expensive impact massagers to be ineffective, but cheap foam rollers and lacrosse balls to be great.

I’ve used this one for a lot of things. I’m sure it’ll work just as well for bass as piano. It’s more squeezing and heat than vibration but it’s nice. I have a scumbag body with arthritis and muscles that like to freeze up and cause constant pain. Playing bass at times can be just as painful as lifting weights but I’ve learned to just push through it, have the fun and pay for it later. Pain doesn’t mean as much if you earned it.

Vibrators and weed this post jumped the shark real quick. J/k I’ve seen that stuff used with cupping but do they actually burn it in stick form too?

Do you get good results? I’ll try (almost) anything once.

There are plenty of Moxibustion techniques.

This weed one(if your neighbours smell it, they’ll call the cops on you)… is the most common, but it’s also used direct on skin, on top of moxibustion pods, with acupuncture needles, etc.

On really bad days(ie: middle left finger triggers), doing 10-15 min of moxibustion(elbow to finger joints) does help. I had some TCM training(3y) so I know a bit… ideally you should find some professional near you and learn from him.

It’s not hard, but you need to get used to locations and how to.

Edit:

Boh (Used to play for Babymetal) also does it… slightly different.

You can see my “collectibles” in the replies.

I wonder whether it wouldn’t be better to use before playing rather than after (or maybe both)? I have quite painful arthritis in my fretting pinky and my physio advised me to do gentle exercise and warm it in a basin of warm water before I start a practice session on the bass.

For me it helps more before.

Not all cases are the same… I’d say try out.

My mom swears by this stuff called “blue emu”. It’s basically a muscle rub without strong smell or the usual tingling.

I’m still on the fence about it. She uses it for trigger finger and says it helps. I’m on the fence because I put it on and forget about it but then I don’t remember having pain in the first place. So I think it works but I have to pay attention better.

I wish salves like that just came in a body wash

Knowing my neighbours, they’ll probably bang on the door to join the party. :joy:
