So I got one of these a while back (there may or may not have been a review this and keep it deal) but it’s an interesting little device and being able to massage the muscles and fluid out of your hands seems like it would be helpful after a few hours of practice.
I remember, when I was a kid, I discovered pictures of ladies using strange massage rods on their faces in normal “house wife”-oriented fashion catalogues (for Germans: Otto, Quelle, Neckermann).
This was the late 70s.
I was utterly fascinated why women had to massage their face or neck all the time! I remember asking my mother and grand mother about tenseness in their face, cause of this…
Little did I know that the application would be for completely different body parts
I will be looking forward to your report on how well this works.
This strikes me as one of those things that could be really helpful, or complete snake oil. The fancier the device, the more suspicion I treat it with. I work out a lot and find expensive impact massagers to be ineffective, but cheap foam rollers and lacrosse balls to be great.
I’ve used this one for a lot of things. I’m sure it’ll work just as well for bass as piano. It’s more squeezing and heat than vibration but it’s nice. I have a scumbag body with arthritis and muscles that like to freeze up and cause constant pain. Playing bass at times can be just as painful as lifting weights but I’ve learned to just push through it, have the fun and pay for it later. Pain doesn’t mean as much if you earned it.
This weed one(if your neighbours smell it, they’ll call the cops on you)… is the most common, but it’s also used direct on skin, on top of moxibustion pods, with acupuncture needles, etc.
On really bad days(ie: middle left finger triggers), doing 10-15 min of moxibustion(elbow to finger joints) does help. I had some TCM training(3y) so I know a bit… ideally you should find some professional near you and learn from him.
It’s not hard, but you need to get used to locations and how to.
Edit:
Boh (Used to play for Babymetal) also does it… slightly different.
I wonder whether it wouldn’t be better to use before playing rather than after (or maybe both)? I have quite painful arthritis in my fretting pinky and my physio advised me to do gentle exercise and warm it in a basin of warm water before I start a practice session on the bass.
My mom swears by this stuff called “blue emu”. It’s basically a muscle rub without strong smell or the usual tingling.
I’m still on the fence about it. She uses it for trigger finger and says it helps. I’m on the fence because I put it on and forget about it but then I don’t remember having pain in the first place. So I think it works but I have to pay attention better.
