I’m thinking about getting a bass and small amp to practice with at my jewellery store when it’s quiet. My wife thinks it’s a bad idea and won’t look good.
Is she right or do people have little practice spaces in their offices?

I smell acoustic time.
I have this on my list to carry around on longer car trips with camping, etc.
Your wife knows nothing!
I was kinda thinking about a u bass as an option. Small and easy to put away if it gets busy.
There’s a pharmacy in my old neighborhood that plays Japanese post-hardcore/metalcore stuff like Maximum The Hormone and Envy instead of muzak.
Just go with it.
i have found in general that the public at large is very interested when they see an instrument. as long as you’re not noodling around when customers need attention. otoh if it’s going to cause a bunch of anxiety and marital strife, than the answer would be hellsno
btw there is always a certain belief in business that no employees can appear human at any time. like we’re all some kind of robots built to serve the public and we have no human needs or wants. i have always found this ridiculous, this notion that it is “unprofessional” to take a sip of coffee in front of someone or whatnot. i mean sure, there are limits and i think a little common sense is needed. would this cross the line? i would suggest maybe a trial period to see how people react, if they do at all. again i highly suspect that if anybody cares at all it will be along the lines of, oh do you play? can you play a song?
It depends on the vibe of the office. Some may object some might not care. I would use headphones instead of an amp though.
I was just thinking about this this morning. I so wish I could bring a bass to work with me, but there’s absolutely no way. I want to rig up something silent to work on fretting or something.
Its pretty low key and solid walls between the neighbors. Not sure about headphones since I have to hear the phone and the door. Besides its not like I’ll be cranking up the volume lol
If you have space to sit and play the size doesn’t matter. In fact, I’d preferred the standard length. The bottle neck is the setup. You’d want something that you can just turn on, one switch, and go. I have a few basses at my restaurant and a couple of amps too,
That’d kind of a pretty good problem to have in my limited estimation…
I’d agree with this. If it’s a shop and you’re the only one working in it then why not if there are no customers. Are you the owner? If not permission probably required.
As @Al1885 says, you want a set up you can pick up and put down very quickly so one suggestion I’d make is you want a passive bass otherwise you might find yourself going through a lot of batteries!
I have a small corner in my office where I practice from time to time! Small Peavey amp and a cheap Talman bass works for me. I usually shut my door and keep the amp volume very low when I have a “session”.
If you only have an open space, I could see this being tougher.
My next bass was going to be a passive jazz so that works. I own a jewellery store so I’d have to find a bass to match the store, something gold or silver perhaps
While I’m not at a public place of work, my office contains these right next to my desk.
I think a tasteful looking guitar hanging on a wall in any business is a conversation starter. I also second the acoustic, or like me, U-Bass option.
My electrics and full-size acoustic are right behind me so nothing is far away.
Do you do the gold plating service there, you can do that yourself as a project. That would be fun and great marketing.
Some think like this could be fun too
I know a couple of goldsmiths but I’m not sure if plating rings or whatever is the same process but it’s something to look into
Hey if you are getting into it let me know I’ll be your test subject,
Might be hassle shipping to Canada but I’ll let you know for sure
