Small world! I just found out my brother in law played in the Michael Barclay Blues Band and you took a class with him at SRJC. He told me to “pass along his WARM regards.” (And says you are “a VERY accomplished bass player”. I gotta agree, and gotta say you are a very excellent instructor!)

Why does an amp need a wifi connection?

Firmware updates (it’s a modeling amp). But you have to remember to switch off the WiFi after checking/updating, or you’ll get audio dropouts (documented in the Studio 40 and Stage 800 manual). There were a couple of updates early on, but not in the last 2-3 years.
The Studio 40 also has a Bluetooth connection for streaming audio if you don’t have a cable for the AUX port or you have a phone that doesn’t have a headphone jack. Or you’ve got an iPhone and you don’t have the necessary dongle. I can’t remember, but I think that you have to switch off the Bluetooth to use the WiFi, and then switch it back on after turning the WiFi back off.

Wow, very small world! My dad played bass with Michael Barclay back in the day too, I remember killing time at his house as a kid while they rehearsed.
