Tell me about onboard preamps. What would be the reason to switch it out if you already have a preamp on a pedalboard?
You got religious?
You got hit in the head?
Tried EMG for the first time
Simplicity?
Or just plain bought the wrong one.
One example I could think off is if you have an old school Roger Sadowsky style preamp with bass and treble boost and cut like one that came on my Fender Marcus Miller reissue and want the more modern bass mid treble, you can just swap out the preamp to a John East Marcus Retro.
The only real reason is to be able to really control your tone directly on your instrument. Also sometimes, onboard preamps are a part of an instrument’s tone. (think some Musicman’s)
Personnally I prefer passive instruments and a preamp on the pedalboard or simply the preamp of my amp.
But the onboard preamp approach is totally legit. For some people it’s somewhat getting simpler.
