The lack of options can be so attractive for many people. Speaking of P bass. One of the most expensive Squier bass has only one volume knob. It cost more used than some brand new Fenders today. I know for the fact that our very own Toby @T_dub owns one, I sold mine to him that’s how I was introduced to these fine groups of Peeps.
I bought it because of the classic 50s look - I particularly like the telecaster head stock shape and I think the single pick up looks cool. But, as you point out, anchoring your thumb on the pickup is not very satisfactorily. This is because it has no cover on it and your thumb rests on a very thing edge above the coil. It actually gets painful after a while. Prior to fitting the custom pick guard, I had a Bic biro shell attached to it with some double sided sellotape. That actually worked really well as a thumb anchor. The trouble is that it won’t stick to the new pick guard very well - it comes flying off after a while. I’ve now bought a some 6mm Perspex, so I can make a thumb rest for the bass that uses one of the existing screw holes. I did try a Thumb Fin. That was cr@p. To high and too big. It really got in the way.
The bass sounds really good and is fun to play. That said, the neck is chunky, so I find it more difficult to play faster lines on, compared to my Dingwall. Playing harder lines on it are a workout. Sometimes I deliberately practice on it for that reason, as it makes the Dingwall feel even better!
Your bass looks beautiful! I like the shape of the headstock, the colour of the body that shows the wood grain, and the beautiful pick guard!
Yes, that’s exactly what I disliked the most about the Sire.
What? Really? Noooooooooooooooo…. I was going to say “how could you!”, but as a temporary solution it’s completely understandable.

That’s an interesting idea! It looks almost invisible in the picture if one doesn’t know it’s there, and it doesn’t interfere with the bass guitar’s looks. It looks beautiful.
I don’t know the Squier Classic Vibe 50s P, but the neck on the Sire D5 doesn’t feel chunky at all. It’s a very nice neck! And the bass feels light. But I don’t know Dingwall either, so I don’t know how the Sire’s neck would compare to it.
