One-pickup basses (single coil), what's the deal?

It seems he had more than one bass with 4 pickups.

We sometimes talk about the bassist not getting much camera attention. He surely made sure all eyes were on him. And then there’s the traditional bass destruction act. It hurts to watch.

Well, this would be true in any normal group but this is Manowar - a group who apparently used to sign their record contracts in blood and wear Tarzan outfits on stage.

Only the strings thank God, but yes I don’t get why people do this…

Same here. I am 64th on the list for the 2025 black Joe Dart 3 (shorty P bass). Can’t wait.

I had a D5 I updated.

Came to me for a song with the headstock snapped off.

Very nice modern take on the OG Precision.

And quite simply, at the time the fender electric bass was invented, there wasn’t really much choice for a pup other than the standard single coil :slightly_smiling_face: The later split single coil pup keeps a similar sound with the ability to reduce hum.

When one considers the pups, it’s also helpful to consider what amps were available at the time and that they often had challenges that we might not have now with current gear.

Black or natural? They have two separate build lists, and they sold a lot more naturals than blacks. I hope mine comes straight from Asia without a stop in the U.S., which would definitely slow down delivery.

Natural. Matching my others. :joy:

Speaking of the ‘51 here’s my favorite MIJ Reissue with Fralin pickup.

And here’s the Squier with the MIJ’s pickup.

Never change, Al

You seem to have such a huge bass collection, @Al1885 ! How many?

Do you have a favourite bass? I realise this might be a difficult question to answer.

@Al1885’s bass shed is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside. :joy:

I immediately thought “TARDIS”, but @sshoihet beat me to it!

Ok, probably the collection is at this point so big, that’s impossible to keep track anymore, without an excel spreadsheet

There’s a couple other contenders (especially if you factor in other instruments too) but yeah Al is king here.

Nobody, but no-body, around here can come anywhere close to comparing with @Al1885 in terms of the sheer number of basses he owns.

He is first a true player, and second a walking encyclopedia of knowledge regarding the basses he collects, curates and sometimes mods.

Now I’m wondering, if Al could only play each day with one bass, and could only play with that bass again after he played one day with each bass, how long would it take? How many times in a year could he play with the same bass twice, or would it take more than a year

It might be either very difficult or very easy to choose a favourite bass with a collection that big. Which bass is played the most, Al? @Al1885
