I’m trying to learn a song that requires me to Play relatively (for me) fast quarter notes on the open E. It’s too fast for my fretting finger to dampen and too weird for my next plucking finger to prevent. So what on the track sounds like a perfect line of discrete plosions feels like one long maple syrup pour. Help?
What song, out of curiosity?
Into The Wide Open, T Petty
I like this song and play it myself. I use the plucking fingers to shorten the notes. Works for me as I’m also not solid on muting with the fretting fingers.
You can also play it on the A string, fret 7 (which is also an E)
I hear a little muted or Staccato so you can certainly play it with your thumb while palm muting the notes. That said the song is slow enough to play with your left hand controlling the notes duration.
Oh man.
Because of the thread title, I was sure it was going to be a Crowbar song, or a Sleep song, or some super low and thick metal riff.
Petty was not my guess.
Wedgie rubbers, my friend. I bought some a couple of weeks ago and I am converted
I had to look up “wedgie rubbers” to make sure this wasn’t something from junior high locker room days. Interesting. Is this something many of you have tried?
Hah yeah it made me giggle a bit
I caught the guys talking about them in this thread -
As someone who has pretty good muting technique and plays a lot of open strings, i play that sort of thing on the 5th fret of the B on a 5 string whenever i can because I’m lazy and don’t like to work too hard ![]()
You just have to work at it, maybe slow it down if required and employ whichever fingers are necessary.
Sounds like staccato 8th notes to me, I would channel your inner Jamerson here and only use one finger to get the appropriate note length (this was easier for me than muting with my fretting hand). You could also play the E on the 7th fret of the A string if the open E is too muddy.
