I get that it’s his schtick but it’s not very good. His early contents was good, lots of research now it’s more of talking points and mods and tone comparisons.
I think Youtubers have the same issue as any artist/band that is too long in the business. They start out young, fresh, unconventional and raw … and then get greedy and assimilated by the mainstream!
He literally modded a dingwall Nolly with a stingray preamp and over complicated selector to make it sound more mainstream and enable it to sound like a Jbass or stingray
this is like taking a ferrari and welding a Ford F-150 body on it
I think part of what you say is true. The JB has it’s unique sound and if you want a P or a MM don’t change the electronics but get yourself a P or an MM.
But… this wiring is not a series switch (like the Fender S1 switch) and certainly not a preamp and this is not designed to turn a jazzbass into a humbucker bass (although it has the possibility to do so).
With this wiring you can MIX the pickups in series. For instance when you play from the bridge pickup for maximum bridge growl and want to add some bottom by dialing in the neck pickup you can now do this in parallel (standard way to mix single coils) but also in series to add more heavy mids than would otherwise be possible. The dial lets you subtly add just the amount you need. It will still sound like a jazzbass. Passive, growly, bright…
If you are completely happy with the traditional JB wiring then leave it.
If you need more control over the way you blend pickups and may want to add a bit more mids and more bottom but still stay completely passive this is a very good and very new way to do this. Active systems will change and colour the bass’ sound. This wiring keeps all the original sounds intact and just adds a load of new ones to it.
Thanks for coming by. Your product is interesting and looks like it adds some cool flexibility to a standard J-bass.
My issues above are purely about how going in with the goal of getting a humbucker sound but using a more or less stock J as a starting point, while possible, is both maybe the hardest path to get there and also somewhat discards the strengths the original.
Love to see vendors posting though, we need more of that.
What we say since the begining is not about the brand, we all know that Harley Benton has a great value for money. It’s just about the choice of a JJ bass to archieve a humbucker tone, which is just weird and not very appropriate. But you do what you want, we’re trying to advise you, not convince you.
Why would it not be appropriate? Fender has put the series switch in some Jazzbasses… It is a great sound, fat and loud but still with the Bridge growl audible. It may not be your taste though.
Because there are tons of basses with humbuckers out there and it’s just a more rationnal choice for those who are searching for a humbucker tone. If you’re searching for a guitar with a humbucker tone, will you buy a Telecaster and wire the pickup in series ? (spoiler : it won’t sound like a humbucker). It would be kinda more appropriate to just choose a guitar with humbuckers, that will do that sound as is, and much better. But again, to each their own … I was just trying to help make a better choice.
Right. It’s the hardest possible path to get to what he wants, and the results will be limited compared to some far simpler and easier choices.
We’re also talking about an instrument that hasn’t even shipped yet, with no ETA. It’s in a prime position to be cancelled and something more aligned with his goals chosen.
Of course, all that really matters is that he is happy with the instrument, and he has convinced himself he wants this - so, aside from some good natured ribbing, it’s time for me to give up on the advice here
This is what it’s about. Turning that HB into something it’s not and with the money pouring to that HB it’s no longer has the HB value.
It’s incredibly tough as @Whying_Dutchman has limited selection. He can not use anything more than 30” scale because of shoulder problems. There are not many choices to choose.
Listen for yourself. My last cover I pit pretty much fat pickup basses without being obvious like Double humbucker. I thought that the Mustang is the fattest.
All are at center detent, neutral tone.
@Whying_Dutchman you tell me which tone you think is the fattest?
