Orange or Fender?

So in the last few months I’ve gotten back into playing bass again after about a 10 yr break. Running sound at my church got me back into playing. I have been playing without an amp due to my old practice amp getting lost during my most recent move.

A local music store has 2 used amps I’m interested in. An Orange Crush 50 and Fender Rumble 100. I’m leaning towards the Fender. But if anyone has any experience with either amp please share what your pros and cons. Thanks!

I am biased… because I love the Orange darker tone. With that being said, I’ve been told it might be slightly trickier to start with… but when done… it’s there.

If you can, plug into both of them in the shop and give them a try.

They’re both good amps. Neither one is ‘better’.

They’re both 1x12 speakers. The Rumble weighs only 22lbs and the Crush 31lbs. If that’s important to you.

I have the Rumble and it sounds great. I’ve even used it to play with other people.

I plan on plugging into both. It’ll be a few weeks until I will be able to purchase one. So I’m doing my research in the meantime. Thanks for the feedback!

I think buying my Rumble 40 was a mistake. Compared to my old SWR working man’s 12 it’s night and day. Now the SWR is 100W and a bigger speaker size but even at 3/4 volume the Rumble just gets loud but lacks the feels.

I’m also not a fan of controls on the back. My Rumble is like 6mo old or I’d return it.
That being said it is REALLY light. Tone wise it’s nice but again it just doesn’t move any air.

If you are in PA I’d be happy to cut you a deal on mine but if I were to do it again, I’d go 100w+ on a Fender or most likely buy a different manufacturer.

A Rumble 100 would be similar to your SWR tho wouldn’t it?
(genuine question-I don’t know)

Apples and Oranges @MattyD

The 40 is a smaller speaker.

If you compared the Rumble 100 and your SWR both with 12” speakers it would be a fair assessment.

If you can afford it @Leebs1986 go for the 100 and miss out the 40. If you stick with it then the 100 will make more sense playing with others. :man_shrugging:

Maybe. Comparing a 40 to a 100 isn’t technically fair but my hunch is it’s the 12" speaker that is making the most difference. That being said a 10" sub should be able to move a good deal of air…

I had a Rumble 100 and it didn’t cut it for me and the heavy handed drummers I’ve played with. I gave that to my nephew and bought a Ampeg BA-210 with 500 watts. That thing is amazing, but heavy. So now I also have an Ampeg RB-40 that I can throw in the car if I want. All that to say… I don’t know, it all depends on what you are planning to use it for.

I use the RB-210. It’s sorta heavy but it’s pretty comparable to the Rumble 500. I think the RB weighs 2 more lbs than the Fender. 39lbs vs 37.

I have a Rumble 100. I’d trade for an Orange in a second. I think they sound better

I had an Orange Crush 25 with the 8" speaker and regret selling it and keeping my Rumble

I have not played the Orange but I have used a Rumble 100w in some rehearsals.

What I can tell you is the current Rumble Series amps are a world apart from their predecessors and are good sounding amps with some nice built in features. I believe Fender gained some access to far better bass technology and topology when they bought Genz Benz years ago.

A lot of Jeff Genzlers work with his Genz Benz amps may have found it’s way into the Rumble amps including the contour circuit which can really help with getting the desired tone from these amps. It’s also a key feature in Jeff’s current Genzler Magellan amps.

I have no issues any longer with recommending a Rumble. I would suggest the 100w 1x12 over the 40w 1x10 but in the end you’re gonna be the best judge of your needs.

Area of a circle increases exponentially as a square of the radius.

A 10" speaker is ~75 in.sq.
A 12" speaker is ~110 in.sq.

That’s moving roughly 1.5x the air.

It’s mostly going to be to practice and jam out at home. I don’t think I’ll be playing with a drummer at any point. And if I do it’ll be at our church and in that situation I would be going into the PA and not using an amp

To emphasize two points:

  1. As @soulman says, the current Rumbles — v3 — are way better than the earlier v1 and v2. Since you are buying used, make sure it’s a v3.

  2. Most important, as @Barney says, go play them! What your ears tell you — and how you like the controls and weight — are way more important than what anyone here (including me) says.

I have been thinking about an Orange 40W, because Orange.
But I will probably upgrade to a Rumble 100 at some point because I think it will do what I want better, which is jamming,
Also I have a Rumble 25 and no complaints

Do you actually not know the formula for area of a circle?

No

That’s for nerds.

It’s not something I use every day, but yeah, I do recall it.

The Math Lady meme was just there for a bit of humor. That’s all.
