I start with my index then middle finger when plucking the strings. But when I use three fingers I lead with my ring, then middle, followed by the index. Always in that order. Especially playing anything Iron Maiden. I best describe it as a galloping feel. My fretting hand is the same way. Faster descending than ascending. Is this an oddity?
Curious as to your experience.
ETA: I do start with my index often, more so when I play on my pant leg or a table.
No, most people will rap their fingers in a particular style on tables, usually pinky to index, trying to do that in reverse takes some considerable thought and coordination, and much slower. So, it make a great deal of sense that leading from ring to index is exactly the same .
Exactly. And I start the ball rolling with the first note by index then roll from ring back to index. I am going to add the pinky and see where that goes. I will post a video at some point.
Well as the saying goes, the first rule is do what comfortable to you. I don’t think about what finger sequence I use or consciously alternating my plugging fingers.
That said if there’s a fill or groove that requires special attention and alternating I usually start with middle finger and I definitely use specific sequence when I use 3 fingers because that would have been the way I learned and practiced that in slow mode.
The only time I spend thinking about my right hand is when I’m learning the phrase, after it’s in the bag it’s on autopilot.
