The output jack on the bass is now loose and I need to tighten the nut. Is this normal?
The output jack pulls out easily. There is no resistance or mechanism in the jack to really snug the cable into the jack. I have just noticed this when trying out different guitars. I really like the jacks where the cable is a tight snap in like fit into the jack. I am looking for suggestions on a part for my first bass modification.
My output jack is on side of the bass. I use a straight connector cable. I think there are more forces on a straight cable when I am playing sitting down from the jack hitting my leg when I need to angle the neck of the bass higher to be able to reach the higher frets. Do you think if I was to use a 90 deg connector cable it might prevent the output jack from getting loose?
Thanks @Barney, this has been helpful! I also never considered different wiring configs for passive or active basses. I think what I will do is to take a look at the jack style. (I think it is probably a tang style).
First, I will pull the tang apart abit to try and get that tighter/snap in fit I am wanting.
I had to do exactly that on my Ibanez only a few months after getting it. That looseness was causing a lot of crackle and static as it got knocked whilst playing. After bending in the tangs that grip it all problems vanished (other than my c**p playing!).
