I am new to bass, and just got my first one (Ymaha TRBX305, 5 strings) a few days ago. I have been enjoying Josh’s lessons immensely!
Could someone recommend good headphones (over ear) that are able to connect to the amp as well as the computer to be able to hear song/myself playing?
I have also been thinking of buying an amPlug, but not sure about it yet. The amp that I have got at home is Ampeg RB-108 RocketBass Combo.
I’ve used the AKG 240 Studio headset for the last few years and they’ve been great. The one thing that I like about them is that the cord can be disconnected from the headset, and they are very comfortable (and I wear glasses)…
I have the Austrian Audio HI-X60. They are a little pricy … but I have not heared a better Sennheiser, Beyerdynamic nor AKG, even more expensive ones.
I must have tested 15-20 headphones between 50-1500€ in local stores and have driven sales people absolutely crazy, before deciding…
They are very neutral and analytical, so they go very deep but never get boomy.
In terms of sound quality, it’s really hard to beat this Koss. It’s consider “God Tier” by many Audiophiles. I probably have half a dozen of this.
More comfortable than most IEMs and headphones and really excellent audio quality. I’m saying this while owning some crazy a$$ headphones like the Sennheiser HD 800s and the HD 650 as well as others.
Audiophiles have a weird love affair with cheap Koss stuff that i would have loved back in 1987
On my edrums i have a set of beats solo headphones that a buddy gave me, the red coating is flaking off the earcups and i should replace them because it ends up all over my carpet and clothing… but they’re comfortable and they work fine lol
I like the V shape-ish tuning for bass practice. Not too overly bassy but deep enough to enjoy the tone.
I find the build quality as well as audio quality of the V-Moda is really awesome and perfect for music production as well as practice. I have a few pairs and just love it. Another favorite for especially final mix is the Blue Mic headphones. The audio quality is super awesome for final mix that would sound good in your car or on a bluetooth speakers everyday life stuff.
There’s one thing i’ve learned over my many pairs of IEMs, earbuds and headphones and that’s fit/comfort are most important to me. Unless something sounds extremely terrible, my brain will adjust to the FR in about 5 mins
For playing bass, anything is good as long as the low end isn’t too muddy. I like something neutral/bright for stuff like jazz and ambient, for most other stuff i l like a bit more bass. I use Wavelet on my phone/table with AutoEQ when required.
For mixing/mastering, reference headphones/monitors aren’t always neutral, sometimes they just have an FR that lets you hear the “bad” stuff better… I think it’s the Yamaha NS10 that was generally regarded as a bad speaker but very highly regarded for studio work?
You’re exactly right about the final mix and how it sounds on everyday life stuff! In photography i found that unless you’re printing, it really doesn’t matter that you have a nice monitor that reproduces shadows/highs well because most people couldn’t see that on their monitors/phones. That’s why i think the whole “sounds like they wanted you to hear it” is kind of silly because music should be mixed for how most listeners will get to hear it, on BTearbuds not for the people who have $3000 headphones and $80K stereos and special rooms to listen in Most people like sony and bose earbuds/headphones and they’re objectively terrible
