Phone choice-discuss

I am planning on getting the bride a new u-beaut phone for Xmas, focus is on the camera.
I can afford a good one for once, so I am getting a good one.
At this point I am pondering the flagship Pixel and the S24ultra.
Focus is on camera quality primarily, but battery life and processing power get a look in also.

I have a brand new iPhone 16 Pro Max winging its way to me, so an iPhone is always my vote. Been riding one since they first premiered in 2007.

As a trained photographer, I’ve been amazed with the iPhone cameras the last few years. Especially. my iPhone 15 Pro Max camera and lenses have been phenomenal! The new iOS will bring a ton of AI functionality to my new phone. Can’t wait.

Huge iPhone fan (and developer) here too.

I’m a diehard IPhone user. So iOS it is. Both my sister has the s24 and fold and another has flip. It’s just not for me. The s24 is nice but it’s just not my thing.

You aren’t speaking my language here.
We don’t do iPhones->rusted on Android users, don’t judge it’s how we roll.

Totally don’t have a clue what “iPhone-rusted” means, but, oh, well. :man_shrugging:

Well that’s that. I’m just don’t enjoy getting my apps and update seconds that’s why I stick with iOS. Bought a Samsung tablet from Costco a while back. It’s junk. I paid $249 for iPad 10th gen and it’s just super awesome.

Although, I’m not sure if I’m a big fan of the iOS 18. The photo app is a mess and it stops working with my Boss FS 1 WL.

@MikeC domyou know the keyboard short cut? For start stop video on photo app.

I’ve never found Apple products as user friendly or intuitive as they advertise them to be.
Had a MacBook I was given and it drove me spare trying to do anything on it.
Opening apps or programs, finding and moving files everything took 4 times longer than it should have-I hated that thing and all it’s devil spawn ancestors.
My son loves his iPhone tho.

I don’t know what you mean by that.

Anyhoo, I am really just interested in the Pixel or Samsung at this point.

That statement I will never understand. Apple stuff literally invented intuitive UI/UX for mobile devices. But that’s OK. It’s all good. Use whatever you know that works for you.

I’m an iphone guy myself, but both my girls are Android fans (where, oh where id I go so wrong  ) and being Dad and a tech guy they ask me about that stuff. If I were doing an Android, I’d go with the S24. It’s got the better camera and battery vs the fold. The fold seems like it’s matured enough to be a worthwhile contender but for what your priorities seem to be the 24 would be the winner imo.

Edt: I tried to talk my younger daughter into the fold so I could play with it when she’s out here for xmas.

I prefer android/samsung, I have an S22U and the S24U is a great phone! The S24U loses the 10x lens for a 5x which is unfortunate.
Samsung Expert RAW gives you a lot of control in challenging conditions or where you want to get the most out of camera. Early on there were a lot of good apps on iPhone that weren’t available on Android but I rarely find that now. Some of the Android apps were terrible on tablets because they treated it just like a big phone but most of that has been fixed now. One thing that iphone has had until recently is better OS support, Android was only 3 years for OS updates and 4 years for security but it’s getting longer now, esp on flagship phones: S22U is 4 years and 5 for security, S24U is 7 years which is pretty nice! Battery life on iPhone is hard to beat too.

Development on android though is a mess due to fragmentation and frequent changes in the languages. Right now, android feels like windows in the 90s  I think there are just too many languages in general making everything more difficult.

Both are great the pros and cons kinda washes out each other with features and price. If you have less to spend then Pixel the camera apps is not optimized right now but it will. Samsung have great spec but hit or miss with things on the camera app.

If you like camera check out the MrWhostheboss and MKBHD. They both have great things to say about them.

I’d love to get a fold but the durability of the screen is just not that great. I’ve got a S22U which i love but i keep thinking about getting a small iphone for when a smaller/lighter phone would be more convenient like biking and paddling.

If you’re really considering that, I’d hold off until after the holidays. I’ve read rumours that they plan on releasing a new iphone SE in early 2025 which is supposed to come with the A18 (the CPU in the iphone 16), which would let you play around with Apple Intelligence if you feel curious.

Wild. I thought it was mostly Java and Kotlin? Is there something after Kotlin?

iOS dev has mostly moved to Swift for new apps but older large apps are still solidly Objective-C, so you need to know both at a lot of jobs.

Samsung has the flip and fold down. The UI is pretty good but in terms of shear power nothing beats the Ultra.

My sister went from 13 pro Max to S24 then got the fold. We work together so I handle the fold everyday it’s kinda weird size on both orientation, but gorgeous and generous real estate. Not all apps are optimized though.

Yeah I saw those, good reviews and they both score well.

Yeah! Both sides get to see what they want to see regardless of the score.
