I’m just getting started and I’m playing a Squier Sonic Bronco. The pickup barely extends beyond the E (and G) string. This makes it very uncomfortable for me to anchor on the pickup and play the E String. I find it more comfortable to put it on the edge of the pick guard. I’m going to make sure that my next bass (or pickup) doesn’t have this issue, but in the meantime should I just get used to anchoring on the pickup, or is it alright to move to the pick guard? I only have this issue with the pickup and E String. Thanks.
There are various options available; thumb rest, ramps, diy, etc.
You should anchor your thumb where you feel most comfortable and where it doesn’t interfere with your playing.
Some anchor their thumb on the lowest string, and in case you play on the E string here, lift the thumb as needed.
Some use a “floating thumb” that is not anchored but just hovers close to the string(s).
There are many different ways… you need to find the one that works best for you.
I don’t use a thumb anchor that keeps me “glued” to a certain position dictated by the pickup placements or similar. I want to be able to move my plucking hand as needed to create different sounds/timbres.
I have the plastic screw on ones you can get on ebay/ali.
Some I have screwed in place but on my acoustic I used strong double sided tape and it is good.
Interestingly I have them in different positions on different places-so work out where you would like them for a particular instrument.
I don’t always used them when I am playing as I tend to move around for different sounds
I used double sided tape to put one of these on a bass temporarily… about a year ago. Still there.
Thanks for the thoughtful reply.
Thanks for the information.
