Pickup Music

I’ve been seeing some online advertising for Pickupmusic.com. About a year ago when I first started looking at online bass courses, I didn’t find them. Are they new? Does anyone have any experience with them? How do they compare to some of the more established online courses?

From their “About” page…

Pickup Music started in 2015 as an Instagram community run by our co-founder and jazz guitarist, Sam Blakelock. The community grew into one of the largest online communities of musicians connecting through lessons, live shows, meet-ups, and challenges.

To save others the search, it’s 30/monthly or 180/annually with a 14 day free trial and 60 day money back guarantee.

Looks interesting. I already have so many courses that I haven’t done that I won’t be signing up just yet, but a 2 week trial should give you an idea of how the course will go and give you an impression of the teacher…

I don’t know anything about their bass stuff, but I’ve gone through some of their guitar lessons - they have Dr. Molly Miller doing some lessons, who’s quite an accomplished musician and a bigwig at USC. I would say they are up there as one of the best online guitar lessons.

I didn’t even know they had a bass course section or I would have likely done that given my subscription. Super happy with this course so far though as well.

They have 5 - 7 days or so for each grade, with 5 - 8 grades for a given “pathway”, such as beginner, late beginner and intermediate. At the end of each grade, they have a couple of songs which are written by the instructors, and solidify the concepts of the grade. These songs have “backing bands” playing along - with one version being played by the instructor, one lesson on how to play the song, and finally a version without the instructor playing. Looking over the bass courses, they get into different styles of music in each of these pathways, but don’t dig deep into musical styles with their own pathway. (as they do with guitar)

Their guitar stuff is really good, so I’d assume the bass stuff is as well - if you’re looking for another online resource. Corbin Jones is the instructor.

I’ve been working through this course over the last few months. I’m almost finished with the beginner pathway. So far, I think the course is very well done. Good videos and I feel like it’s a great complement to B2B. I would say that a total beginner (I’m not far from that) would hit a wall fairly early in the course without taking B2B first. I think it’s a great follow up to B2B and helps reenforce a lot of the concepts in B2B. Ive been focusing more on rhythm/counting/groove in this course and I feel like its helping me improve.
