Nice head-to-head demos of eight different brands/flavors of rounds.
Which strings do you prefer in this lineup?

Wow, the Fenders sounded much better than I expected.
They’re very bright, brighter than I expected.
From what I’ve read, they’re made differently than when Fender originally made them before D’Addario took over.
I was pleasantly surprised by the Fenders as well… I think my jazz bass could use some new strings, so I might give them a try.
The Fender rounds are not bad at all. I was surprised too. I’d put them at slightly below EXL’s, but I like them better than all EBMM strings I have tried (Slinky and Super Sllinky).
I liked the DR Hi Beams the best. The Cleartones, which I had never heard before, also sounded good.
I had never heard of the cleartones, but they sounded good.
My knock on Fender rounds has never been the sound, to me they’re rough on the fingers.
That’s good to know. The reviewer didn’t address how each brand felt under the fingers.
The Fenders stood out to me for their brightness, for sure, but they were too bright for me.
The Cleartones did seem louder than several others in the lineup.
The D’Addario XT and GHS Boomers seemed quieter to me, particularly played with fingers.
I’m not a flats player, but my most recent bass came with flats on it.
I asked the seller what brand/flavor of strings they are, but he can’t remember.
So, question: Can you flat lovers please take a look at these blue windings and maybe deduce what these strings are?
Looks like Labella’s
Fender are Teal, TI are Red, Labella’s are Black
There’s an old John Ford movie, Young Mr Lincoln, starring Henry Fonda. And there’s a scene where Lincoln is at a fair judging a pie eating contest. He takes a bite of one pie, and that’s his favorite. then he takes a bite from another pie, and that’s his favorite. Then back to the first.
The scene came to mind yesterday as I was playing, first the D5 with the JBE blade, and that’s my favorite. Then the FGN with Fender Pure Vintage 63 pickups, and that’s my favorite. Then the D5 with the Stinger and that’s my favorite.
The JBE has more low end punch. The FGN with dual Ps is warm and mellow and balanced across the strings. The Stinger is also balanced, but is more percussive.
I’m in a dilemma
D’addario Chromes are blue
That’s not a bad spot to be in @Wombat-metal. I think of my basses as my children, I love them all but like some better than others.
Thanks, Jerry. It might be hard to see without zooming into the image, but these windings are dark blue. So these very well are D’Addarios.
Thanks, Wombat. Sorry for the image not showing them off enough, but these windings are dark blue.
You’re not in dilemma, you’re in heaven.
D’addario chrome flats I think if it’s blue. What do the balls look like?
They may be GHS precision flats. Those have purple binding.
The balls are colored, so D’Addarios.
Thanks, but they’re definitely a dark Royal Blue.
