Plugins I Have Known And Loved

The Softube compressors he has there are outstanding too. Their stuff is great.

I just got their dbx160 model for free

I also agree with this tbh. The more basic the plugin the less tinkering you can do. I still use basic plugins for creating tracks.

I wouldn’t recommend fabfilter to beginners. Especially not for that price.

Ah, cool. My compressor works exactly the same.

And the knee stuff is actually important for me currently, as the cover I’m testing it with sounded cr@p. The bass had a “banging” quality, hard to explain, but it s#cked!

no, the knee is really subtle, it was not the cause of your problem.

Your problem was you were trying to use a limiter as a compressor

limiter = infinite compression. Your problems were almost assuredly a combination of threshold and ratio. I can tell you this without even listening to the track just because it is obvious based on what you used to compress.

It’s a learning process

Yep! Compression is one of the more difficult effects to grasp (which is why I suggested not overwhelming yourself with a super powerful plugin).

But the one you got is really good. You’ll get there, just try to stick to the basics at first

Meanwhile I just completed my collection of the Arturia Minis by buying MiniFreak V. It’s the weird yet surprisingly deep digital brother to MiniBrute V. I did not need this synth (as I have the equally if not more weird Modwave Native, which is kind of like strapping four MiniFreaks to a Kaoss Pad), but what the hell, great used price and I did want it. I really dig Arturias own creations (a lot more than their emulations of others). Very harsh and aggressive untamed synths, totally my thing.

Just added iZotope Ozone to my forsale list as I have mastering covered by other stuff now.

It’s basically a more powerful version of Logic’s Mastering Assistant with additional loudness control to various standards and profile targets.

Wow, Bitwig’s builtins are good. Almost tempted to sell Pro-Q already

Bitwig looks like a mix of Ableton, Logic and Reaper

It’s made by former Ableton developers, but yeah it’s got Reaper’s flexible feel to it too. Awesome so far, really liking it. Pretty sure I am going all in.

Super easy to set up sidechain modulation for proportional EQ (just did it). Really digging how hard Bitwig leans in to DAW modulation sources. Not bad EQ for a built-in.

I don’t think I can handle reading almost 800 posts but what are the main plug-ins one should have?

I would recommend a good parametric EQ, a good amp and cab sim, and a good compressor and limiter, in that order, to start.

Depending on DAW you probably have some of these already.

Free BDDI plugin, if SansAmp is your jam.

Just picked up UAD’s Distressor, mostly because Melda’s was not good. I mean that melda’s was a fine compressor, but it was not a good emulation of the Distressor.

One funny thing was it immediately reminded me of how much I love d16 Frontier as a limiter. I got this awesome 909 sound going with it, just deliciously gnarly, but then realized I was boosting its output too much and driving the signal way up in to Frontier’s limiter threshold, which adds a lot of tone color

There was absolutely no need for me to buy this this and I do not recommend anyone else does - I just wanted another good vintage compressor model to go with my LA-2A. For 99% of you this would be a waste of money, unless you really want a Distressor.

However it is on sale for $39, which is nice.

Yep, they have a couple of -essors and other effects plug-ins on sale right now!

Yeah their LA-2A and 1176 are, of course, canonical.

(That’s Bill Putnam’s company)
