Especially as you got post #800
Coming back to my “Your wish is my command” statement: just purchased Sonible Smart:EQ 4 and tested it on a cover.
Very cool! So, now I only use Sonible Smart:EQ 4 and Sonible smart:comp 2 on the bass track and it’s a huge improvement to before.
Just ran the, ehm, “AI” and made some fine adjustments.
The Sonible plug-ins seem to not add their own “character” to the tone but somehow make the character of the bass much clearer. Can’t explain in English…
Maybe one question though: since I have set the string action height very low again (the way I like it), I have more fret “clicking” (not buzzing), cause of my aggresssive playing style.
Yes, I will practice to play cleaner … in the meantime: can I use the EQ to remove the clicks? Just cut-off at frequency X?
It can certainly help. Just find the frequency range of the clack and put in a cut.
For bass another really common thing is to use a high pass filter or low shelf to cut stuff below 30-40Hz, to make the mix less muddy, and the same on the hich end of the bass to cut around 6-7k and bring down some of the clank. Unless of course you want the clank.
This generally makes the whole mix much better. Just don’t tell the low end tone snobs that you’re trimming a lot of it out
Cool!
I will tell them that the idea comes from you, so they dont mind
Oh they know
While I would love to be able to call myself a “tone snob”, I do the same
Actually, I’d think tone snobs hate mud!!
They do, but don’t realize they are the prime offenders
very helpful, I always assumed that number was more around 10K or so. you can cut a lot more than I would think.
Depends on the tone you want; you play with it. That’s the nice thing about parametric EQ, you can play around. Also a high shelf or low pass filter cutting 7k will obviously also cut 10k too, that’s also an option. And you don’t have to filter it all away either, you can just reduce. EQ is awesome
@howard, @wellbi, @Paul, others: are you familiar with Reason??
It seems to be able to lots of stuff, including lots that I don’t understand (yet). It’s not exactly cheap either
Oh yes. Propellerheads Reason was one of the first biggies, really popular in the late '90s. Stacks of synths
Pretty dated at this point.
Ah, OK! Yes, the GUI looks kinda dated…
But, it still seems to be both supported and developed (version 13).
Yep! Still going, just eclipsed by more recent instruments and DAWs.
Yep, very nostalgic name. Never worked with Reason, but ReBirth (1997) was awesome!
I really liked the skeuomorphic design of Reason. Was fun to just move cables around, LOL.
New synth plug-in with some cool retro/vintage sound options:
And it seems to be on sale right now (still around 100 USD); also, there is a trial version (for 20 days or so).
Cool, Softube did a CS-80 They are really killing it with their vintage synth emulations.
The synth that is modeling is the Yamaha CS-80, heavily used by Vangelis and other artists. Great for big sweeping pads.
I think if I were to buy another synth right now though it would be the new GForce Oberheim OB-1 plugin - it’s more my style than a CS-80.
Softube do great work with their plugins. My PC died so I had to recreate my setup and forgot to add Softube’s Console system to my default channel instance and for a couple hours I was just wondering what’s wrong with my sound. And then I realized that I am missing the sound of SSL 4000 of the Console system which is quite audible and distinct even if a sound is just passed through the emulation. I really like the company.
Yeah they are awesome. Their vintage gear emus are spot on. Their Juno and Prophet 5 sound really close to me. I also love their naming scheme (the number is the year the synth came out - the Juno is Model 84, etc )
Cool!
