Plugins I Have Known And Loved

It’s an unreleased beta but you can download it for free off the site. It’s open source.

I cannot figure out where I would download this. Skill issue?

Ahh no, it’s tough. This won’t be a good option actually because all you can download off their site is the emulator engine with a UI for the specific synths; but it requires the original synth firmware downloads which they do not provide. Oh well.

@howard - today I met a crazy group of hiphop punks in the park.
One of them asked me, if I know any FREE software that could generate cool hiphop beats.
They are hiphop punks, so no money.

Any ideas?

I’d say give them an unused free version of one of the more loops-oriented DAWs like Ableton that come with gear. Most of those come with canned loops already.

Ah, I might have that.

Is there a plan B? I had the impression, that the software should be simple to use, for this specific target group…

For punk hiphop they could just download free drum loop samples (all over the place) and free synths like Surge. Still need a DAW.

So, I give her my Ableton Live Lite 12 and advise her to get Reaper free?
Thanks!

And - waht about somethbing like this:

There’s lots of free synths, I would point them at Surge XT and Vital.

Ah, I had a look at their PC, and that looks like it was purchased when Sid Vicious was still alive. So, a Windows software will not work…

One of them has an iPad. Still need to find out if this is 1st generation or something recent.

Any ideas, what would be cool on iPad?

But free, if possible??? They have no money, and look like they will rob me next time!

Garageband is all they need and it is free. Alchemy is a totally workable synthesizer, and the drummers are there for them.

alrighty @howard let’s see what kind of rabbit hole i’ve jumped into now.

time to start downloading synths. expect questions  like this one for instance, do most downloads let you load it onto more than one machine or is it single use only? i have a super old mac mini that probably needs to be updated, but i will probably move the old one upstairs to my living room. so i will have 2 macs to play with. how this happened i don’t know. oh and an ipad. i’m tim cook’s bitch now apparently.

Excellent choice!

This really depends on each vendor and their licensing. Generally the worst case scenario is vendors who use iLok but even then usually you get a couple activations at a time.

i mean it’s a mac mini. i could just load a synth onto it, unplug the damn thing and carry it upstairs to use it there if i wanted to.

I’d recommend to start with some of the good free ones, no licensing worries then!

Here’s a few:

u-he actually has several other free synths on their site:

The Launchkey came with some instruments too, including some great ones from GForce - including GForce’s emulation of the Novation Bass Station

Also Alchemy, the synth built in to Garageband and Logic, is not bad at all.

BTW all of those are not only free but are also excellent sound-wise. u-he in particular makes fantastic synths.

lmao I LOVE Bad Gear.

Strongly recommend just getting Syntorial. It’s not online, it’s an app!

It’s super good.
