Thanks, @terb! I probably should have stressed that this is pretty much the same bass line as played on the record (so, not anything I came up with!)
That is what intrigued me so!!

Great job Lester, @LesterH.
Plenty of work all over the fret board.
I have never heard the song beforeš¤
It sounded muddy at the start, not sure if that is the songš¤
Got cleaner as it went on.
Hope everything is going okš
Cheers Brian
Great cover @joergkutter,
Beautiful tone from the bass, melodic and easy listening.
I enjoyed watching and listening to your version.
Do you always wear the gloveš¤does it add to the tone?
Cheers Brian
Thanks, Brian!
Yes, I tend to wear the glove whenever I am playing. I have an issue with my pinky and the glove helps. It also helps reducing some string scratching, but otherwise it does not add to the tone.
@joergkutter Joerg⦠A most beautiful piece played beautifully!.. Very melodic and full use of the fretboard with balanced tones throughout. Played like a true professional BADASS! Your wifeās gonna love it!
Keep on Thumpinā!
Lanny
Thanks, Lanny! What you had prepared for your wife was a big motivation for me to get my act together and perform a tune live during my wifeās birthday dinner
@LesterH - So glad you were able to find a bit of time to work on another cover Lester⦠So sorry to hear about your father in law, and and itās good that you were able to pick up your bass and play a bit to hopefully take your mind off things if just for a little bitā¦
Keep on Thumpinā!
Lanny
Like the saying goes @joergkutter,⦠āHappy Wife, Happy Life!ā⦠Just be sure that when you finish playing for her to make mention that you could have played it SO much better if you had (fill in the blank here ie: new bass; better amp; etc)ā¦
Thanks @JDDaniel⦠I probably should have done better on it but I was outside my comfort zone playing RHCPās⦠My kids grew up listening to that music and they (and my grandkids) bet me that I couldnāt learn to play it in a week - all the time knowing that I donāt enjoy the music. Sometimes itās difficult trying to play something that you donāt like, but thereās a lot of things in life that a person needs to do that they might not like either⦠I guess I needed to do that song to show my grandkids that even though I might be retired and can pretty much do whatever I want, I still do things that I may not enjoy doing⦠Oh, the bet⦠I bet them each a 6 pack of beer⦠I donāt drink a lot of beer, but they doā¦
So Iām suggesting that the beer will be consumed by the grandkids when they come down to visitš Bill, @Lanny.
So in reality itās a win win, you got the motivation to do the cover, and they get to come down and drink the beer they lost in the betš
Cheers Brian
So I decided to pop this on here, Still got a ways to go with technique. and still have some parts to tidy up. but its still something regardless. Enjoy Die to live - Volbeat - YouTube
Guess this is a question that is probably answered somewhere here but how do you personally go about learning a song? Do you read music? If tabs, where do you get your tabs?
Not Exactly @TNKA36 Brianā¦
Typically they will call Connie and tell her that theyāre coming down and she will always ask them if the need or want anything. They will ALWAYS mention beer, so Connie ends up buying the beer, giving it to them when they get here,⦠then they in turn show me the beer that they got to give me for winning the bet knowing all along that I wonāt drink but maybe one, and they drink the rest⦠So itās more a āWin-Winā for them since they loose the bet yet (At no cost to them) ultimately win the prizeā¦!
Yep, Iām hearing ya Bill, @Lanny,
We as parents and grandparents are always accomodating to our kids and grandkidsš
Cheers Brian
Rick @Mao - So glad you were able to get a cover put together! Not my genre of music and donāt know the song, but it sure appeared to be a real āChuggerā!! Damn!! You were like chugginā the hell outta that song! Double DAMN man!!
Not sure what you are using to record, but there were times I couldnāt hear the E string being played, and the tones were a bit muffled so it was a bit difficult to get a true sense of the bass presence in the song. Were you playing through your amp and recording everything using either your computer or phone?
Anyway, congrats on posting your first cover here!
Keep on Thumpinā!
Lanny
@Lanny Thanks I got a Nux MP-2 to practice with, but I still havenāt quite worked out an ideal way to put things all together. so I recorded audio, and video through my phone while playing through amp.
The song is Die to Live by Volbeat and its pretty chuggy. As for E string thereās a lot of open E playing in this song. Normally id be playing it as a closed E on the B string of my Peavey. but I have it still torn down until I install the EMG pre amp etc.
I plan to try doing some more with this stuff once i can play directly through the NUX while still getting everything captured together. @JerryP has been a huge help on that effort.
Also I did 2 more today using the old Bentley, its a little more punchy? (if thatās what you would call it) on an open E. and i was able to turn up the amp a bit more.

Wow, you are lefty? i like your P-bass tone! great work!
Iām Ambidextrous. but do most things right handed just because of how the world is.
I tend to write more left handed. depending on if its cursive or print. ( my print is better right handed and cursive better left handed.) But the video is shot directly from phone so I think it mirrors the view? @suaryana
Wow! A great bunch of covers to comment on. First @LesterH, Great job with that song. Iām not familiar with the band but the tone sounded great and so was the timing. Next @joergkutter More of my style of music beautifully played. Your wifeās going to love it.
@Mao All three of your video are great. You really got the chugging down pat. Glad I could help with the NUX.
Hey @Mao,
Watched all 3 of your covers, the videos are awesome, your chugging around the fretboard is really solid with nice tone from both bassesš
The audio sound changed from loud to soft throughout all 3, that could be because your recording through your phone?
Iām sure with Jerry @JerryP, giving you some help you will get that part nailedš
All in all really nice effort for your first covers.
Looking forward to hearing some more going forward.
Cheers Brian
