Wow, some nice fills and runs in there (especially also towards the end)! Well done, @LesterH!
Nice job Lester @LesterH,
Great song to cover, Aussie’s are never gunna make it easy to cover😁
Their work
Cheers Brian
Great cover @LesterH! Not familiar with the song but the timing was perfect. Good job!
Thank you all for the very kind words
here’s some more
Finally got a chance to listen and you nailed it - tone, timing, technique. Well done.
@howard thank you! Y’all are the best
Okay, so I took a lot of advice and I went with a simpler song and one where I could clearly hear the drums and the timing of the bass. A pretty straight forward bass line on this one. Hope you guys enjoy and I am open to constructive criticism as always. Only fuels me to get better.
Yessir
That’s a great song to really lock in with the drums and the guitar - nice!
One thing I wondered about right away: why did you decide to play that main riff on the E-string?? I mean it is a great finger exercise, but I would have played it on the A-string. Soooo much easier
And probably sound-wise also a bit “meatier”…
That’s just the way I learned to play it. I’ve seen it played other ways but I decided to build up my forearm strength I guess lol
Way, Way better choice @Shane_Landen… So much better… I don’t know the song, so it’s a bit difficult for me to compare it to anything, but your timing was very much improved compared to your last cover.
I do agree with @joergkutter on the use of the A string,… Using the E string may/could sound better in the overall mix if you were recording through a DAI into a DAW where you could better mix the song with your bass tones… Playing and recording open mic in an open atmosphere can muddy things up a bit, but you did a superb job playing to this piece…
Keep on Thumpin’!
Lanny
Just made my day Lanny. In a non sarcastic way, I’ve come to look up to the playing of people like you (who did an awesome job on the RHCP piece by the way), @PamPurrs, @joergkutter, and @terb to name a few. You guys all always have really good covers. I’m only a month and change into playing bass, but I’ll get there I hope.
Nice playing. I don’t know the song and it doesn’t fit my normal genre but it’s well done.
So, how did you learn it? By watching others? From tabs or notation? Or did someone show you?
If it is from notation or tabs, then that often leaves the issue of the fingering, and there it is totally up to you to find what works best for you… or sounds best to you. I can see the workout you get, but I would totally play it much more relaxed and more punchy on the A string. But, that’s me ![]()
No worries - you are moving fast!!
yeah that’s great @Shane_Landen ! much much better timing, that’s really well played this time and it shows that you obviously chose the right way by playing an easier wong. which is still not extremely easy.
is it the song from Weezer ? I ask everyone who post to mention the author and name of each cover, because I try to keep a list of all covers posted here, thanks !
Great cover, nice and locked in there! If you only picked up a bass a few weeks ago, you are absolutely crushing it in terms of progress and where you should expect to be by now. Keep up the great work.
@joergkutter I learned from a video on YouTube. I tend to have a hard time learning from tabs at the moment and I am just now getting into the lessons where we are learning to read music some so I’m still musically illiterate. I do at least know enough to where I can figure out how to play it on the A string and actually just did a small run through and you’re right, it’s so much easier. I appreciate the advice.
@BassFaceDisgrace thank you for the kind words. I played acoustic guitar off and on but only enough to know some easy songs and barre chords. Other than that I don’t have experience. I do have a habit of becoming obsessed though when I find something I like in terms of hobbies. Bass is definitely an obsession.
@terb, sorry, it is a Weezer song. I normally try to write that in but omitted it by accident.
Thank you guys for giving it a listen and taking the time to write some feedback
@Shane_Landen great job! Love Weezer my son and I covered Say it ain’t so, and another one I can’t think of right now lol
I can’t play from tab either, although I did when I first started B2B. You’re better off not depending entirely on playing from tab. The sooner you learn to read sheet music, the more versatile you will become.
That’s another great song. I got recruited to be in a band at work, I told them they were scraping the bottom of the barrel but luckily nobody else plays bass…anyway, that’s one of the songs we worked on as well. So far they keep picking relatively easy songs so I’m lucky. Did you post your cover to the page? I’m sure everyone would be up for hearing it.
I do have the intent to learn to read music. It seems to make things so much easier on the player. How long into the course were you before reading music really started to make sense? I understand the basics that we’ve gone over but at this point it would take me forever to transcribe a song
