Good job on the song, and good use of that B string! I never saw Miami Vice and didn’t realize this song was the theme song to it.
It wasn’t the theme song - that was composed by Jan Hammer (keyboard player for the Mahavishnu Orchestra). I didn’t know the song Brian covered was in Miami Vice either - I think they used a lot of different music in their episodes. They might have been the first to actually have extended sequences (like 1 minute or two) with only music (no dialog), like a little music video really…
Anyway, here is the theme song - it’s like the 80’s distilled and bottled:
not the easiest bass line @TNKA36 ! maybe a fade out at the end would have been a nice finishing touch but that’s a detail
That was awesome! Cool bass line, tons of changes through it and you hit all of them. Doing a front to back play through with no major mistakes is also impressive. Had you played that live with a band it would have been a great performance. Pretty much no one in the crowd would even noticed where the mistakes were, save for a few bassists who were keying in on it, and even they wouldn’t be critical about it.
Here or there you fell out of time for little very short parts (I do that ALL the time!) but you corrected well which is more important. That is actually a tough one to hit all the changes, lots of finger movement, and it’s a pretty long one at 5+ minutes, and you did all of it! Sincerely, I am impressed and that was a good performance you can take to the bank and be proud of!
Holy 80’s flashbacks, that was good!
Thanks Joe @Jazzbass19,
It was a great series.
Cheers Brian
Thanks Toby, @T_dub,
It has loads of bottom end, one day i might buy a stingray5, then i can compare.
Cheers Brian
Hi Joerg, @joergkutter,
I don’t use any pedals when recording, but i do agree it has the nice synth running parallel to the bass track, that made it really difficult to lock into the timing throughout the song.
It gives you the same type of that wicked mistress feel on the fingers, good thing is it helps to build dexterity.
Cheers Brian
Thanks Howard @howard,
got to use all the fingers, cant leave the little guy out
Cheers Brian
Thanks @sfadams,
Billie Jean with a twist
Cheers Brian
Thanks Pam, @PamPurrs,
I stumbled across this song a while back and thought it would be a good finger workout and it also gave me the opportunity to use the 5ver, i had always struggled with the 5ver because the strings are a lot closer than the 4’s, so there was plenty of motivation to see it through.
I’m glad i can put this one in the vault, now to find something else
Cheers Brian
Its great to see that someone does a cover and it opens up a whole new conversation,
this is what makes this forum great,
Cheers Brian
Great job Brian as usual! Another favorite song of mine from the 80’s. I thought the tone was great as well.
Thanks Laurent, @terb,
I did have it faded out past the end but then changed the way it finished.
I do normally run out past the song finish with the bass line fade out, may go back to the longer fade out, i like it better so i agree with that point
Cheers Brian
Thanks @kerushlow,
It is a great song with plenty of change ups, it was difficult to lock in on the beat with the subtle synth running parallel to the bass.
The fingers definitely get a good workout.
Cheers Brian
Thanks Shane, @Shane_Landen,
Yes, these old tracks give us all flashbacks in time, like where was i then, what was i doing, who was i hanging out with etc.
All good memories
Cheers Brian
Thanks Jerry @JerryP,
Cheers Brian
Thank you! A few others on the channel since then
Um, don’t you have one? I thought you got that blue burst,
Oh, that was a 4 HH, thats right, my mistake.
I am same, one day I may get a stingray, or even a EBMM Sterling 5, but won’t have much to compare it to. LOl
